It's in ASPOL. I thought it was fictional.

Mrs. Y-NO and I went there for our honeymoon. Nice place, not alot of Americanos, more European. Porlamar is the touristy city where you will fly into. It has the Cheers, Hard Rock Cafe, etc. Get out as fast as you can. There is a hotel on the North side of the island it was a lot less touristy. The only golf course on the island was next to the hotel. Just remember, a 5-star hotel here is different than a 5-star there. It's a different constellation. But we got a great deal going Wednesday to Wednesday. With non-stop airfare from Charlotte and hotel for a week, I think it was about $800. Not all inclusive, but still worth it.
Beautiful rustic island. Venezuela is a dictatorship, and this is a state of Ven, so we saw military helicopters and soldiers in the public airport. Didn't really phase us. This was 1999 but Chavez is still in power.
Did I mention that it's a beautiful island? If you go, you have to take the Jeep tour.
PM me if you want more info, pix, that sort of thing.

I've heard that compared to all of the other Islands in the southern caribbean, Isla Margarita is nothing special. If you're thinking about going to the southern caribbean, i reccomend Saint Lucia.

My wife and I had planned to go this summer. We did a lot of research on the internet. Most of the reviews were from Europeans and Canadians. They did talk about how nice the resort hotels were. They talked about flying into Caracas and then to islamagarita. Some of the reviews talked about how beautiful the island was (the jeep tour). Another review talked about trips to the mainland to see Angel Falls and the wild areas around the Amazon.
But we stopped thinking about the trip for two reasons.
1. Europeans and Canadians talking about how cool the water during the summer was. Hello!! Caribbean water cool in the summer? Europeans and Canadians talking of cool water? I lived in England for two years, that water was always cold. Lived up in New Jersey for two years. That water was cool (hey, I'm from Florida, guys).
2. I read a internet news report about a guy they arrested on a plane that landed at Gatwick (near London). The guy had a live hand gernade in his luggage. He had departed from Caracas, Ven. He had left the Island of Maragarita. He was traced back to a Alciada group in Islamargarita. The article then stated that many Alciada groups were froming in Venuszala (sp) and including Islamargarita. Seems that they were feeling safe there. Not hunted by Interpol or any other agency.
I know this almost sounds like when Jimmy was shot at in Jamacia (We made a mistaka). But it kind of makes you wonder why this island is not visited by many Americans. The resort prices are the best in the islands, but I like Caymans, Puerto Rico and also the Virgin Islands.
I too would like to know if any other BNer's have visited or have even heard of Islamargarita. It is there, not just a fictional place.

Me and the misses also spent our honeymoon there. We had a great time. Very much a poverty strictened region of the world, but we never had any concerns about safety. We were there in '94, so it has been a while. If you do go, we difinetly recommend the trip to see Angel Falls. We flew into the rain forest and past Angel Falls a couple times before landing at a hut village and hiking back into the junlge were we swam in the rivers and jump from cliffs, very cool.
You will most likely fly into Caracas. This is a very wild place. It was exceptionally wild as we arrived the night that Brazil had won the World Cup and the people of the city were drinking and having a major party in the city. Our cab ride to the hotel which should of taken about 30 mins. turned into an hour and a half. We were a little nervous, but our cabbie took care of things.
PM me if you want to know anything else.
