RIGHT NOW on NBC is the Tsunami relief concert. Madonna, Maroon 5 and Norah Jones have performed since I started watching at 8, I'm not sure if thats when it started.

ummm... uhhh... You’re both thinking of the same Brian Wilson, the former Beach Boy who went through years of depression and drug use, right? :-? Add that to the fact a band member (Markus Sundland) has gone missing in the tsunami disaster, so it’s not exactly an easy time for Brian and the band. I can’t believe the criticism you both just placed on Brian… :-?

I believe it was a great performance given the circumstances.

Brian’s personal problems and close loss aside remember that this was a benefit concert to raise money for the tsunami disaster, and keep the death toll in mind.

The fact that you two went and complained about flaws in his performance just sickens me to my stomach.

Shame on both of you, and I’m dead serious. :-?

Did anyone catch John Mayer where someone in the band yelling a four letter word that you don't usually hear on NBC? ("oh S---"!) The audio went out for a few seconds afterwords, as if an engineer was trying to censor it, but was to late due to the live factor. Did they mess up or something? I'm not a prude or anything and I'm not complaining that he said it, I just found that strange.

Just heard Brian Wilson out here on the west coast.
Haunting and beautiful song given the terribly sad circumstances

I'll cut him some slack for flattening the one note....

So Brian's voice is pretty shot. I guarantee there wasn't another soul on that show who can write like he can. I still can't get over the fact that he's out performing again. 10 years ago, who would have thought?

PM...I think your "shame on you" comments to Corey and Dally are a little out of line. Yes, Brian did lose someone who played on his most recent album...that is tragic, as is the entire tsunami disaster. However I don't think his grief has that much to do with his poor performance as his lifestyle choices. Are we supposed to make excuses for that? He made a choice to screw up his life and his voice, no one else did it for him. Brilliant songwriter that he is, the fact is he shouldn't be performing because he can't. You could change the venue and the circumstances and I don't think it would change the outcome one iota. He should stick to songwriting, not singing.

And he was far from the only one who had lousy performances. I can count on one hand the artists who actually sounded decent...and have fingers left over. Just goes to show that most of the "artists" these days have very little talent. :( :-?

And just because a singer or band *can* go out and perform long past their prime doesn't mean they should.

JMHO YMMV :)

Yes, I know I could have sounded mean, and I apologize if it was “out of line”. Criticizing an album- promoting Leno performance is one thing, but I just thought dissecting Brian’s voice at this moment and time was a little inappropriate. It’s not that I disagree with any of you, I know his voice is long past its heyday, I just think this is the wrong place and time to express your negative opinions on any of the artists. They were there to raise money, not to blow you away with any over-blown performances. (and no, I was not giving a negative opinion on John Mayer, I just wondered what went on there).

VERY well said, BEG!

PM....yes, it is very sad that he lost someone close to him in the Tsunami disaster. He IS a great songwriter, but that doesn't dismiss the fact that I thought his performance last night was lousy. (Along with alot of the other performers)

I'm sorry you let MY opinion affect you like that. :-?

Like I said, I AGREE for the most part, his voice is past its heyday, but by no means was the performance “lousy”. The song Love and Mercy was perfect for the situation. You are of course entitled to your own opinion, it’s the fact that he was performing to help rebuild lives and as a dedication to his lost band member that made me uneasy reading the comments by you and redwine. I really wouldn’t have said anything to retaliate in any other topic, really I wouldn’t have.

It was a terrific song, PM...and just think of what it would have sounded like when he was at his prime. I know his performance was heartfelt (probably more so than most of the artists there...and I think John Mayer must have been on crack! :o  ). I am more embarrassed for the "aging" performers than anything. It must be so difficult to know that you aren't what you once were, and like all of us they probably have a hard time dealing with that and don't want to admit it. :(

All criticizing aside (and be thankful you didn't hear ME sing!) I wonder how much the performances actually contributed to people donating? I kinda think they would have had the same response if they just ran it like a telethon with all those stars taking calls interspersed with the stories from the disaster. Calling and talking to a celebrity was the big draw, hence why the phone lines were jammed most of the nite...thank God for that! :D
