I believe there are certain people who are born landlocked but they are for some reason drawn to the sand, surf and sun. The call of mellow muisc, steel drums, saxiphones will always be a sauve to their soul. I've known people like this - I'm one of them. This whole cd brings that attitude and relaxation. I ride public transit to and from work - it's been a while since I've dug out the discman and thrown in some batteries just to listen to a cd - this is one of them.

I really like it bacause I can identify with it, I lived in the islands for several years and know of what he sings. I 've sailed the Virgin Islands, both US and British often, in and out of Cinnamon Bay on St. John, and consumed many gallons of Foxy's firewater rum, Foxy is a personal friend. Cruzan and diet was my drink of choice when I lived there, bought Cruzan for $10 a case from the distillery. I've busted my a$$ on the tire swing near Stanley's in Canegarden Bay. I've met Island Boys and Sherrys, too many stories to tell and this cd brings back lots of great memories

BAYA is very good album-- to add to many others. BTW, downloaded it off iTunes. He's got a tremendous voice, but I think what bothers many about him is that KC comes off as 'poser' to music purists. Because there was a time when C&W musicians weren't perfectly packaged, sculpted and pretty like they all are now. Buffett for instance, doesn't necessarily have great looks or even a particularly 'great' voice (in standard sense..)-- but he has 'something' special about him and his personality and songwriting that stands out and rings authentically. You just know he didn't have any big breaks given to him and he blazed his way. He was doing gulfcoast/carib/island when it was WAY not cool in Nashville. and carved his own 'personality' out of his makings..

Having said that, Chesney is obviously an outstanding talent-- and he obviously went on vaca and found something he liked-- and is very wise to play up this angle. Like another person posted earlier-- chicks absolutely dig the guy--so it seems kind of natural for him to play up the 'tan beach stud' image. More power to him.

Good point. I'm gonna start a Drive-By Truckers thread in this part of the message board and see how long it lasts. At least they have more to do with Buffett than Chesney since David Hood (reknowned Muscle Shoals session musician and father of Trucker Patterson Hood) has appeared on his fair share of Buffett albums over the years.

I was a bartender from 1986 to 1989 and people drank rum and diet cokes way back then as well.

Back to the original thread with a few comments.

After the first listen last night of the new Chesney CD I think it will get a lot of play time in my house. A coupe of the songs towards the end really had the Buffett (of the old days) influence and sounded great.

Chesney is not a "wanna-be"... he is a Buffett fan and so who do you think will influence his music...Prince???

Buffett has a ton of influence on country music. Just ask Allan Jackson (twice), Phil Vasser in "Six Pack Summer" and Lonestar mentions "parrotheads" in 2 of their songs.

Actually I am grateful to Chesney because one night about 3 years ago I over heard the lyrics "so that's how Jimmy Buffett feels" and started listening to country music (also) and found a lot of very enjoyable music out there and now I am able to go to more that one concert a year.

Come April 16th our group will be at the Shark Tank in San Jose front row, upper deck (for the 3rd straight time ) watching Jimmy on the stage and the show on the floor

BTW, I'm not sure how closely everyone looks at the CD cover, or if this has already been said... but...

Jimmy's Steel Drummer, Robert Greenidge, plays on a couple of songs on Chesney's new CD.

Okay, let me share my skepticism about Chesney. (I've liked some of his music but haven't heard any of the new stuff.) I guess it comes down to who/what you really are vs. image. It seems to me that KC may really like the sand, beach and islands, but he's not willing to take the risk and "let go" of the ties to and fit in with Nashville. He's trying to play both games at the same time (although they're not mutually exclusive, there's not a huge overlap). So, the beach image seems somewhat contrived and not completely authentic. To me it comes across as what can be marketed vs. where one belongs and then marketing from there (the Buffett approach). I feel like I'm being sold to as opposed to having a chance to buy.

For example, look at a picture of KC; he just can't bear to take off that cowboy hat!! Is it because he's a self-conscious bald guy (then put on a ball cap or fishing hat), and/or to keep the Nashville image?? It's just goofy to me. Tully Mars was a cowboy who went to the beach and you sure don't hear about him running around the islands and boats in a cowboy hat!! It's like comparing something that is chocolatey to real chocolate... the chocolatey is missing the cocoa butter; it just doesn't have that true texture and flavor. I've been looking for it with KC but I just can't quite find it.

actually in a couple of his videos, he is seen without his hat. And just because he is a celebrity doesn't make him any less self conscious about being bald. Celebs are people too and I KNOW many bald men who aren't seen in public with out a hat.

EVERYONE has their own insecurities....I know I do and if I had to wager ...I bet you do to. It simply doesn't have any effect on his music!
