What foods did you eat as a kid that every now and then you have to have.
Fluffernutter sandwiches (even though I can only eat a half)
Bologna sandwiches with chips on them
Ovaltine
Real mac and cheese
My mother wasn't a good cook and she had to feed 4 kids on a fireman's pay. Gourmet wasn't the thing. We also spent chunks of out time as kids as vegetarians and we had goats who were raised for milk and cheese. I don't long for goat milk, yuck.

Do you know what else my mom did with bologna? She fried it then put peas into the cup it turned into. Or she fried it with cheese and made it into a sandwich. I hated bologna as a kid. Swore my kids would never, ever eat it. Now years later I like it every once in a blue moon. My kids who didn't really have it growing up, like I said, hate the stuff.
Ew. my gfather always had to have mincemeat pie for the holidays. We kids would never try it.
You know we lived in an average working class neighborhood. Most owned their own homes and many had 2 cars. We all spent 2 weeks at the shore or a lake in the summer. But nobody was well off, or all are parents were very conservative with money. Now it seems that everybody my kids know has alot of money.

Two things jump to mind:
1. Spaghettios. Only the ones w/ franks in them. The ones w/ meatballs were good until about 10 years ago when they changed the meatballs. Mom used to "make" Spaghettios for me when I was little and we lived at the beach in the summer. I had to come in for a nap in the afternoon, b/c I was much younger than the other kids.
2. Ho Ho's. Always a fave as a youngster. As an adult, the first step to the solution in any crisis in my life is a box of Ho Ho's.

My grandfather was a navy cook during wwII. Whenever we slept at his house he would make mountains of pancakes and bacon. Sometimes pots of irish oatmeal with brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Sunday dinner at grandparents house was usually spaghetti and meatballs, or a very well done beef roast.
I miss my grandparents. Both of my sons love to cook and I tell them they get it from their great grandfather.

My Nana's pot roast.
My mom's seafood chowder with her homemade biscuits, light as air and hot from the oven with butter and honey.
Molasses baked beans and homemade brown bread.
Dad's barbecued steaks -- rare, no sauce.

I used to love making A1 Steak Sauce sandwiches as well as mustard sandwiches, nothin' but the bread and sauce, mmmmmmm good.
Or maybe tuna fish or potted meat.
I heard Tim McGraw's new song speak of fried bologna sandwiches and I have not had one of those in years.
I'm gonna have to do something about that.

When you are spending the big bucks, Taylor's Pork Roll and cheese sandwiches.
I also miss my grandfather's homemade rootbeer. And making snow ice cream, we never get enough snow to do this. Being from Philly, soft pretzels right from the factory still warm, and real Italian water ice in lemon or chocolate. Rita's is not real Italian ice.
