Just to clarify, Steve Goodman actually succumbed to leukemia in 1984.

As for strange pairings, my first Buffett show (circa '79) was on a bill he shared with Nantucket (local NC rock band) and The Spinners during Apple Chill (a play on "Chapel Hill") weekend. One of the first things Buffett did after taking the stage was to thank the Spinners' choreographer.

As for the Buffett/Kerouac connection, I've never really seen one but I was in attendance at the Dead/Buffett shows that were previously mentioned. On the way I saw a car painted up with the Dead Steal Your Face symbol except of the usual skull it had a parrot inside making for a whole other breed of fans out there, Dead Parrotheads....

Okay if you know nantucket and were at a show with them and Buffett in 1979 do you know anything about the 1977 show that Buffett played at East Carolina University?

This was not at the Attic it was a school show also I know the first drummer for Nantucket he quit when he got married before that one hit they had.

In my ECU(1990's)days they would still play the attic.

I would love info on the shows you saw with Buffett AND DEAD when where ect..

thanks Don Juan

I don't know about the '77 show at ECU but I did see Buffett at Minges twice, first on the Coconut Telegraph Tour and again on the Cheap Vacation Tour in support of Hot Water.

Speaking of Nantucket, they still get together to play the occasional reunion gig including a few down here on the coast of North Cackalacky last summer. Most of their early albums (and a live album recorded at the Longbranch in Raleigh from the early 90s) have been re-released on CD through Wounded Bird Records. There is a very comphrensive fan-run site out there where you can find lots more info:

http://www.2112online.com/nantucket/index.shtml

I'm afraid I was very unclear on the Grateful Dead/Buffett thing. What I meant to say was, I was at one of the shows that Buffett mentioned when the Grateful Dead had just played in the area.

If I recall in an interview or two, Jimmy talked of always "wanting" to do a show with the dead but he never did. Right?
I know he talks of a story where the dead were in Charlotte for two nights and he was there the two following nights and "you could tell who had been to two grateful dead shows and two Jimmy Buffett shows". But again, they didn't play together...
In his License to Chill show he did on RM where he talked about the songs, he mentioned he had told Jerry Garcia they should do two shows. Jimmy would open for the Dead in San Francisco and the Dead would open for Jimmy in Florida, and see who showed up.

I wish they had I think a lot of dead heads are parott heads and I think that Jimmy was tryng to appeal to that "demographic" when he did
"uncle johns band" on fruit cakes and especially scarlet begonias sp?
on LTC.
Still, for me at least, for him to perform with "the otherones" or "the dead"
or "rat dogg" or whatever the latest incarnation is would not be the same
as when Jerry was around

I agree. As much as I like the Grateful Dead, "The Dead" just isn't the same (obviously). I liked them much better as The Other Ones. Them switching to "The Dead" seemed to be more of a marketing decision than anything. I saw them in Raleigh this past summer and they had special guest Branford Marsalis sitting in with them. As much as Branford brought to the show, I think I would have enjoyed it more if didn't sit in on every song. BTW, Rat Dog is Bob Weir's side project. If I remember right, he's gearing up to the hit the road with them soon before The Dead's big summer tour gets underway.

Yeah I knew that rat dogg was a side project like kingfish and grateful dogg but I agree with what you are saying totally.
I was browseing deadnet tonight and ratdog is doing a summer tour Phil leash and friends doing some shows too.

So is it worth buying on of the live cd's from the dead's 2004 tour? Did they s*** or just not as good?

I can't honestly say since I'm sure every show was different. The one I attended would be worth owning just for their rendition of "Eyes of the World" alone. I wouldn't say they out and out sucked but just like it was with the Grateful Dead, there are moments of brillance, they just don't seem to hit on them as frequently in The Dead. There also seemed to be a lot more cover songs than usual. Some just kinda fell flat but others really soared, like their take on Traffic's "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys".

Yeah it is like there old concerts one was gold one a lump of coal, but for the sheer volume and quality of performances you have to give them serious credit I mean you had
Grateful Dead, The Garcia with Grisham, John Kahn ANd Garcia, THE JGB,
Ratdogg, King Fish, Old and in the Way,Phil Leash and friends
For thirty years Jerry Must have toured and played constantly
Then 1997 Further Fest and 2002 Bonnaro
individual members still kicking ass!
Years after I thought the party was over.

Jahfin I have to ask
You said Dave Matthews Band sucks. You know they played with the dead
a few times when Garcia was living and I think played bonnaro with Phil leash
They also do almost as many versions of Dylans all allong the watch tower
as Buffet has Margaritivlle any thoughts? :D

I don't know about Kerouack (sorry for the misspelling), but I know he hung out with another beat nik author, Richard Brautigan when they were both in Livingston. Unfortunately, Richard commited suicide. I remember him in his declining years as a bum in Livingston, then 20 years later I discovered his writings. He was a genius. Just like the one in the death of a unpopular poet.

Unfortunately the latest rumors have The Dead not performing/touring this year....surprising to me, since it is their 40th anniversary

I don't know that I ever said the DMB sucks but no, I don't care for his music. When he was just starting to hit it big with his second record I saw him on a bill with Big Head Todd and the Monsters and a band called Boxing Ghandis. The Dave Matthews Band was so boring I was lucky to make it through his set without taking any No Doze. I know lots of folks like him but I don't count myself among them. It doesn't help that it sounds like he's been recording different versions of the same song throughout most of his career.

You said he rated high on suckatuide meter its a memorable quote :D

I have heard lately his shows are not as good do not really know I loved "Under the table and Dreaming" did not like a few albums came back on his last solo effort with the guy from Phish

The only concert I went to was great though my memory is limited to flashing lights music in the background a blonde talking about the femine Godess and our vain effort to recreate woodstock.
Oh the storys we could tell!!!!!!

I agree. That's one of many highlights from that disc for me. Branford lives here (NC) now and apparently has a position in UNC's Music Dept., thus his appearance at The Dead's show last summer. Although I'm not big on horns, he's obviously a very gifted player and I enjoy what he brings to The Dead but I also would have liked it if he would have sat out a few songs too. "Eyes of the World" has to be one of his crowning achievements with them though.
