That's pretty impressive in a country where they hadn't voted in 50 years. Most of their citizens have never experienced democracy before.

My hat's off to those that got out to vote, and to all of those keeping them safe while they voted.
Depends on what the sectional returns are. 72% would be about all the Shi'ite and Kurd voters in the population, not many of the Sunni's. Shi'ites have nothing to lose on this one, because of the way the election rules elect slates (simple slate, nationwide, not by district like here.)

Thus, the Sunnis are going to be pretty powerless, not a position they have been in before. Low Sunni participation is also going to fuel the violence, because they were the ones in power before. High turnout is not necessarily a good thing for anything other than spin.

Iraq voters face getting killed if they vote. And yet they turn out ini mass.

In the USA, it takes Celebs and Music stars begging people to vote, Yet voter turn out is low :-? . what we take for granted :(

DEMOCRACY WINS!!!!! THANK YOU TROOPS!!

I'm not belittling the 36 lives lost, that is tragic. However considering what could have potentially happened, this has been a success!
