In a semi-related note, John Hiatt is currently touring with Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark, and Joe Ely. I saw them play last year, and it is something special. The four of them walk out together and sit on stage with acoustics trading songs (they play in alphabetical order).

MerleFest is great, I've seen lots of wonderful artists there over the years such as Doc Watson himself, Emmylou, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, John Prine, Goose Creek Symphony, Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, Mike Cross, Donna the Buffalo, Gillian Welch, Junior Brown, Leftover Salmon and tons more. You're in for a real treat.

I just saw John Hiatt with Joe Ely, Guy Clark, and Lyle Lovett (as earlier mentioned) Friday night in Redwood City, CA. It was a good show (although somewhat different then 2 years ago at the same venue). John had to leave the show early due to a death in the family. Those guys nailed it but you could tell John had something on his mind. He still managed to do his set. If you get the chance to see him, do so.
