Alpena, Michigan

Got a phone call from the military saying they're sending me to Alpena, Michigan for a 3 week school.

Now a 3 week trip to the lovely Michigan shore could be nice, except I'm leaving on February 27th so it's going to be colder than hell and I'm pretty much anticipating being bored out of my skull and completely miserable for 3 weeks...

By any chance, has anyone ever been to this god forsaken hole and know of anything fun to do there in the winter?

It's a 7 hour drive to Chicago!

Actually, northern Michigan is beautiful... no matter the time of year. I doubt there is a lot of action in Alpena, but it will be pretty to look at.

I hear you are pretty good at Blackjack- you could try your luck in one of the casinos. They are 2 1/2 - 3 hours from there!

Oh yeah.. This is probably a good time to mention that both the school and where I'm staying are on the base they have there so there will be no rental car unless I wanna foot the bill myself...

We'll see, I just might have to do that...

We used to have a customer in Alpena. I think he froze to death on his way to the out-house about 3 years ago.

Tell 'em you'd rather attend one of the fire classes, at least there's a chance you'd be warm.

I'm actually going back there in August to do the Medical Readiness Training, but at least I knew about that one and it's during warm weather... Going there in February is just gonna bite it...
