Yup. True statement.
As far as tailgating... they're not kidding; there really isn't any allowed. However, there are pre-parties at Dukes and at the Tiki Bar at the Ashton Beach Hotel, both easy walking distance from the venue.
Dukes has some of the best mai tais and mahi mahi on the island, IMHO.
Shane, not sure where Ocean Beach Resort is, but if you get in to the Hale Koa, it's supposed to be great. You might also try for gov't rates at the Hilton Hawaiian Village ($129 a night, but not sure if you have to be on orders to get that or just show an ID. I've stayed there on business and never had to show my orders, just ID). The only trouble with the Hilton and the Hale Koa is that they're at the far end of Waikiki from the Shell (a good mile and a half away), and parking at the venue is all but non-existant. The GOOD news is DA BUS. Cheap, and stops all over the place. Use it to get to the Shell if you're not within walking distance.
Also, if you haven't booked yet, consider the Aston Waikiki Beach hotel. Great rates, across the street from Waikiki beach (no hotels on the beach side of the road at that point), free breakfast, a 3 minute walk to the venue, and the site of the Tiki Bar pre-party. Be careful when you book; this is the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel at 2570 Kalakaua Avenue, NOT the Aston Waikiki Beach Tower or the Aston Waikiki Beachside Hotel (both a few blocks away). And you want the beach tower, not the mauka tower (no free breakfast with the mauka tower).
Rent a car; see the island. Don't leave ANYTHING in the car, even in the trunk.... car break-ins are a problem.... best thing to do is leave your car empty and unlocked.... Realize that if you rent a convertible it means you ARE a tourist.... pretty much no one who lives there drives a convertible because a) it's too hot much of the year and b) rain showers are frequent. If you go with the convertible, make SURE you leave it empty and unlocked at the beach....
Do the sunscreen thing, or those of you with white haole skin like mine will be SORRY. The sun is strong down there....
Eat local, for cheap. Plate lunch runs about $5-6 and fills you right up. L&L Barbeque and Zippy's are both good. Kens if you wander over to Waimanalo on the Windward side.
ABC stores (the "7-11's" of Waikiki, but WAY better) are great for cheap sandwiches and souvenir shirts.
Another *terrific* place for souvenirs is, believe it or not, WalMart....... Check the map; it's in downtown Honolulu. Shirts out the wazoo...
For sunrise (whether you're up early or not yet in bed...), go to Diamond Head. There are pullouts along Diamond Head Road where you can watch sunrise.
For sunset, right on Waikiki Beach. Watch for the green flash. I've seen it two times in my life, both on Waikiki.
Drive the Windward side of Oahu between Kahala and Kaneohe. The scenery is *awesome*... The easiest way is counterclockwise.... Right turns on and off what can be a busy road. Get on H-1 eastbound until it ends, and follow Kalanianalole Highway (72) right around. You'll go past multiple pulloffs and overlooks; stop at all of them and take pictures.
Just past Sea Life Park, you go past about 6-7 houses on the right. Pull into the next beach park, *just* past the last house, walk back up the beach (right), and you'll come to the estate where they filmed Magnum PI, tidal pool and all. The beach is public, as are all beaches in Hawaii. Watch the tide.... gotta do this at low tide unless you wanna swim it.
Follow the signs for the Pali Highway, go back over the Pali to H-1 and back to Waikiki.
More travelogue later.....
