Maybe POW can rally...I still think Jimmy is seen as an outsider to the mainstream country powers that be; he's too independent and different to be embraced by them. It's as if they gave him a "visitor's pass" and it's just about expired. Not necessarily right (and rather short-sighted), but that seems to be the reality.

Yeah, I think a lot of people in the industry figure his "free membership" is pretty much expired.Quiet and Shy wrote:Maybe POW can rally...I still think Jimmy is seen as an outsider to the mainstream country powers that be; he's too independent and different to be embraced by them. It isn't a good sign when a song in the lower regions of the charts stumbles and falls a few spots. Even though the total spins may have increased, POW still isn't gaining ground like other new songs.
I have to disagree with the way the label is working Buffett's singles. My guess is we'll see a video for POW in about a month. By that time radio will have already given up on it. And you don't remix a song without making that version commercially available. There are those who will hear the song, buy the album and be terribly disappointed the version they've heard on the radio is not what they bought.
The choice of a third, solo single is also extremely weak. While many on here may like POW, it is not a commercially viable track - especially on today's country radio. Coast of Carolina, in my opinion, would have been the logical follow-up. But hey, what do I know. I've only worked in the record and radio industry most of my life.
Alas, chart success isn't everything as we all know. Oh well, perhaps a video will surface soon and it can enjoy the same level of success that has been achieved by HGL and TATS.

Really. If you’re going to take Toby Keith out of there anyway, why not choose one of the originals from the album that was a solo to begin with? Coast of Carolina is a very superior song that would certainly be loved on the radio and would most likely be a commercial success, but that’s the industry’s loss.
Why they did the extra work to have Jimmy record more vocals doesn’t make sense to me.

I agree that Coast of Carolina would be a great release. It's a strong song that is well written. Also, with air play it might help some understand that Jimmy goes beyond the rum and tequila swigging party boy. Then maybe we'd get beyond the short-sighted reviewers who say Chesney's music is similar to Buffett's but with depth...(total and utter bullsh*t).

Buffett probably didn't go back and record more vocals. Its more likely he sang the entire song in the studio and the Toby Keith vocals were mixed later.Parrot Monkey wrote:Why they did the extra work to have Jimmy record more vocals doesn’t make sense to me.
In my personal opinion most reviewers have it backwards. The review I wrote for Chesney's album was exactly the opposite. While his Old Blue Chair effort is solid and enjoyable, it is quite shallow in terms of storytelling the way Buffett tells a story.Quiet and Shy wrote:...short-sighted reviewers who say Chesney's music is similar to Buffett's but with depth...

Perhaps "Window on the World" would have been a good radio solo single, although I'm not sure if it's "country" enough.
"Coast of Carolina" is a good song but the "Carolina" part does not do it for me. Now "Coast of Florida".....that's a hit!!!
"Coastal Confessions" is too long and would surely be edited, besides I think that it's better left to us Parrotheads.
"Anything Anytime Anywhere" is a great song in my opinion but I'm not sure that radio listeners wanna hear a slow song from Jimmy.
I still think that "Sea Of Heartbreak" should have been next.
A country classic changed drastically and turned tropical with Jimmy and George "slam dunk" Straight singing over steel drums and steel guitar.

IMO, the bottom line is, Jimmy Buffett as a solo country performer is a tricky sell, and RCA/Mailboat did not handle the situation correctly. I think any more attempts at country radio success off of LTC, will be a waste of time. The ship has sailed and the marketing gurus who handled this situation missed the boat.

He's a man without a genre.
At least, a man without an easily defined and tightly programmed genre according to the homogenous Clear Channel.
