Waylon's cover of "He Went To Paris" is great!!!
He also covers "Defying Gravity" although that's not a Buffett original

Willie and Waylon's "If I can Find a Clean Shirt" cd is my favorite of all of their collaborations.

"Drinkin' and Dreamin" is one of my fave Waylon songs:

"Drinkin' and Dreamin'
knowing damn well I can't go
I'll never see Texas
L.A., or old Mexico
But here at this table
I'm able to leave it behind
Drinkin' and Dreamin'
a thousand miles out of my mind"

Good stuff!!!

Good stuff. What was the old song he had that went "I might be crazy but it keeps me from going insane"? I always wondered if he borrowed the line from Jimmy or vice versa - I've only heard it a couple of times and I have no idea when it was released.

Waylon and Jesse are both great people. I've been blessed with the opportunity to meet both of them and it was a wonderful experience. Denver Pyle (Uncle Jesse from Dukes of Hazzard) sponsored a fishing tournament in my hometown and I was lucky enough to be able to work it several times, thanks to RhumChum. Waylon always put on a fund raising concert for the event. One of the best times I remember having is the two of us working at the stage door.

Yo Fur - from what I can tell, "I've Always Been Crazy" was released in September 1978. Changes in Latitudes was released in 77 I think. Here are the lyrics for "I've Always Been Crazy" - do you think Waylon is a parrothead?

I've always been crazy and the trouble that it's put me through
I've been busted for things that I did, and I didn't do
I can't say I’m proud of all of the things that I’ve done
But I can say I’ve never intentionally hurt anyone

I've always been different with one foot over the line
Winding up somewhere one step ahead or behind
It ain't been so easy but I guess I shouldn't complain
I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going insane

Beautiful lady are you sure that you understand
The chances your taking loving a free living man
Are you really sure you really want what you see
Be careful of something that's just what you want it to be

I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going insane
Nobody knows if it's something to bless or to blame
So far I ain't found a rhyme or a reason to change
I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going insane

That sound like an awesome time! I've always really enjoyed Waylon's music. I was really pleased and suprised when I picked up David Lee Murphy's newest album and found that Waylon had written the title track. And of course, it's prbably the best on the whole album.

IMHO I think "I've Always Been Crazy" is more about his lifestyle in the "outlaw" country music and how the lifestyle was taking its toll on him even back then. Waylon was a professional musician as far back as the 1950's. In the 60's he too had problems with the Nashville music scene and although it's possible he and Buffett crossed paths and were friends I just have this feeling that to coin him as a parrothead isn't too accurate.

I think a Jimmy/Waylon collaboration would have been great! Or hell, I'd just like to hear Jimmy do "If I Can Find a Clean Shirt" That would be fun to hear in concert.

Oh it was!!! I remember sitting accross the table from Denver Pyle the night before eating and drinking beer!! It was truly a memorable experience. Then the night of the concert some drunk came up to me and said I looked like Jesse - which I didn't understand as I'm tall, she's short I had curly big hair, she had straight. And to see a performer that you admire right before he walked on stage!! Here's a pic taken in front of his bus - mind you this pic is probably at least 15 years old and we both had big hair back then   I wasn't a blonde then either

Linda don't kill me for posting it!!

I would be in seventh heaven if I'd have gotten the chance to meet either Waylon or Denver Pyle. I grew up on Waymore's music and the adventures of the Duke boys.

Denver was a really nice down to earth person. Talking to him and being around him was like being around a friend. He treated you just like you were his next door neighbor. The fishing Tournament is still being held. Here's a link to history on his tournament.

Count me as a big Waylon fan. Along with Black Sabbath's Paranoid, Buffett's White Sportcoat, the Grateful Dead's Workingman's Dead, and Alice Cooper's Killer, Honky Tonk Heroes was one of the first albums I ever owned as a kid back in the early 70s. All of them had an affect on me but there was really something special about how Waylon took Billy Joe Shaver's "cowboy songs" and made them his own. That, and how his unique mix of rock and country helped forge a whole new musical style that never existed before him. A lot of imitators followed in the years ahead but they only helped to emphasize what the rest of us already knew, there was only one Waylon and there will never, ever be another like him. The loss of him and Johnny Cash in the last few years left a huge void in country music that I don't think will ever be filled. Someone like Waylon only comes along once in a lifetime but thank goodness he did.
