I can't get interested in spring training, maybe because I'm a Mets fan. After the Mets first intrasquad game the sports guy on one of the local channels said we had some reason to be optimistic, Mike Piazza threw out a runner trying to steal. They showed the replay, he bounced the freakin' throw to second base. Wake me up when the season starts.

MESA, Ariz. -- Nomar Garciaparra hit a two-run homer Friday to back Kerry Wood and lift the Chicago Cubs to an 8-3 Cactus League victory over the San Francisco Giants in front of a sellout crowd of 12,857 at HoHoKam Park.
Wood (1-0), who will be the Cubs' Opening Day starter for the third straight season, gave up two hits and walked one over two innings. He struck out two.

Corey Patterson and Todd Walker hit back-to-back doubles off Noah Lowry (0-1) to open the Cubs' first and put them ahead, 1-0. Garciaparra, apparently a quick healer after being hit on the left wrist Thursday, followed with his first spring homer off the first pitch to make it 3-0.

Lowry, who was 6-0 with a 3.82 ERA last year with the Giants, struggled with his location, and gave up five runs on five hits and one walk over two innings.

Henry Blanco led off the Cubs' second with a single and reached second on a fielding error by right fielder Todd Linden. Blanco then scored when third baseman Pedro Feliz misplayed pinch-hitter Danny Klassen's ball for another error. Patterson followed with an RBI single to make it 5-0.

Pinch-hitter Julio Ramirez hit a two-run single with two out in the Giants' fourth off Glendon Rusch to make it 5-2. Patterson then ended the inning with a running catch over his shoulder of Ray Durham's fly ball.

Dave Hansen led off the Cubs' sixth with a home run off Matt Herges, and Cody Ransom added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
