I started in the mid 70's and went to my first concert in Tucson, Az in sometime between 83-85.paid $8.00 to go see a minor league baseball game that he played immediately after the game. Not real sure when I became a parrothead or even if I am one after the way some holier than thous came out of the closet. That has nothing to with how I or anyone else feels about JB.
On this one I see Jahfin's point....I know many people that don't like the negativity of the stereotype that comes with the "parrothead" label. One only look around at what alot of media has said about JB Phans.
I dunno if it is still out there or not, but there was a site about "I hate Jimmy Buffett" or some such site. The guy that made that site really hated parrotheads and Jimmy Buffett. True that was his problem but I cannot tell you how many times I have heard people say they hate JB and parrotheads cause of the way they act or dress or whatever.... Again that is their problem.
I do agree that what makes a parrothead is on the inside DEFINITELY COMES FROM WITHIN and not the outside....and most parrotheads are supposedly noncomformist, and many are very successful people. Far from the beach and boat personae that people percieve them to be.
Jahfin repeatedly said that he is just a fan and that is why he is here. Why keep hounding him?
I dunno about all of his other postings elsewhere or throughout the board but in this particular case...I do feel he was right in what he had to say if those are what he beliefs and not want to be called or considered a parrothead if he so chooses and still be a fan.
I know several people that go to concerts, that never tailgate or put on the "parrothead uniform" if one will allow that term to be used. Just as someone said elsewhere about their apparel to a concert included none of the coconut bras, grass skirts, etc...Certainly there are the many wannabees that come around in full dress colors that do give parrotheads a bad name.
Most people consider parrotheads to be nothing but margarita drinking drunks that run around in flip flops, loud shirts, or beach apparel and to be no better than any bum on the streets.....they just don't get it. It is a stigma and generalizatiion that is often made and is spread around like wildfire....Like any other generalization the bad news or parts travel the fastest and are easiest to be believed. Is there much difference in being a fan and a parrothead? I suppose it is in who you ask...apparently there are those in here and elsewhere that quite clearly make issue of it.....
Not much in the open media about what it takes to form a PHC or the requirements to maintain a charter or all of the fundraising and community service and other work, they must do...yeah they certainly sound like noncomformist to me....
Not much in the media about all the fund raising things that JB has done...
All of you know it is true....for a long time I did not consider myself a parrothead....... I was as Jahfin was...I was listening to JB before the term was coined....why give him a hard time about not wanting the label?
Parrothead is a way of life or lifestyle within the person....that some know it is there, some just discover that it was always there and they never knew it. No one real event created it.
Is there any requirement to be here to attend "organized events" arranged by a majority of people that supposedly are nonconformists?
Is there any requirement that one must attend so many shows to be allowed to be here on this forum?
Is there any requirement for any number of people one must meet in real life to be here?
Is there anything that makes one more a JB fan more so than another?
Is that how you judge someone that comes in here and claims to be fan instead of a parrothead?
Again I cannot say anything about any of Jahfin's other postings anywhere else, in and on this board and forum. That is his business.
BTW who wanted to fight??? ...okies ..... Meet me outside the bar at 1700 hrs ( that's 5:00 PM) Where something loud and obnoxious and crank the JB on the boom box.....if I am not outside in 3 minutes, go ahead and start without me.
