Extreme Makeover: Home Edition!! In my home town!
Hello everyone!
I just wanted to pass on to fans of the show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is airing a 2 hour episode this Sunday that was filmed in my town of Arvada, CO!! The house that will be made-over is just about 5 minutes from my own house.
This is one of my favorite shows, and is, in my opinion, one of the best family programs going right now. It moves me to tears most weeks...and I'm not even mentioning the HUGE crush I have on Ty Pennington.
When they were filming last November, Victoria and I stopped by the work site and got to meet Ty and crew and collect autographs. It was the same day Victoria was in the talent show so she is decked out in some extremely bright and crazy clothing. If we happen to make it on in a shot or two, you'll see a 7-year old sitting on my shoulders, so please watch for us!
Anyway...thanks for letting me ramble. Happy Friday everyone!

all houses except one was done in 8 days. And when you consider they also have to pass all the local code inspections the house should last as long as any home built under the same codes.

Up to code is one thing, building on top of concrete that hasn't had enough time to properly set is another.ph4ever wrote:rednekkPH wrote:Do they really pull all that work off in 7 days? And if so, how long does it take for the house to start falling apart?

I think the show's general purpose is good but it seems to me that they go overboard on some of the ammentities that they add to the homes. I walk around this city everyday and see people sleeping on benches in 20 degree weather. Some of these people are just as deserving and wouldn't need a wine cellar like I saw on one episode. With that said I still think they are doing great work.

I must have missed that episode. I don't watch it religiously but every show that I've seen the family was very deserving. As far as building homes for homeless, having been around the homeless quite extensively I can honestly say that the majority are there because of drug or alcohol abuse and wouldn't appreciate a new home as much as a family whose extremely ill child can't go home to try to get better because of issues with the house. A lot of the homeless are there because they want to be - period.

Agreed! I struggle with that issue too... but the show is still inspiring, despite some of the extravagance.RAGTOP wrote:I think the show's general purpose is good but it seems to me that they go overboard on some of the ammentities that they add to the homes. I agree with you somewhat. A good portion of the homesless are dependent on drugs and alcohol but not all of them and I'm sure that the some of the homeless in Boston, Chicago, NY and other cold weather cities prefer not to be homeless. Everynight the city of boston has to turn away homeless people from the shelters because their simply isn't enough room. I guess if they wanted to be homeless they wouldn't be seeking shelterph4ever wrote:RAGTOP wrote:I think the show's general purpose is good but it seems to me that they go overboard on some of the ammentities that they add to the homes. the only reason they are seeking shelter is because of the cold. In Dallas when it's cold the shelters are full with people sleeping on the floor - other times they have their "camps" and areas where they live out in the elements. There are also many who choose to live in shelters and be homeless because it's free food, free place to sleep. There are many ways to get out of homelessness - they aren't easy but there are ways. I have encountered many who have been homeless for YEARS and they choose to remain that way because they choose to as they don't want to abide by the laws of society - they live in their "camps" and panhandle to get just enough money to by their next fix - be it drugs or alcohol. They look at their panhandling as their job.RAGTOP wrote:I agree with you somewhat. as I said before your right there are people that choose to be homeless. There are also families living in these shelters that aren't dependent on drugs and or alcohol and could use a boost just like these families in the show. Again my point was that some of the ammentities that they add to these houses aren't needed and resources would be better spent helping these other families in addition to the ones on the show. That's allph4ever wrote:the only reason they are seeking shelter is because of the cold. This particular episode is about creating a duplex-home for 2 homeless families. Not only will this house help the 2 families that have moved in, but after the 2 years that the families live there, another 2 families will have the opportunity to take advantage of using the duplex and getting back on their feet.
I think it's an extremely creative and useful way to help people out. I don't think a homeless family is any less-deserving of a top-of-the line kitchen or washer/dryer. I'm thankful every day that I have the house that I do have, regardless of western-theme wallpaper or that the knob on my clothes washer just broke off.
This show is doing something extremely commendable. It would be a crap-ass show if they gave the homeowners crappy appliances and such. What makes it enjoyable is the rags-to-riches appeal.

Now that's a good idea!buffettbride wrote:This particular episode is about creating a duplex-home for 2 homeless families. I also wouldn't expect them to give them crappy appliances or any other neccessity. Maybe I havn't watched the show enough but one of the episodes I saw they turned their barn into some sort of wine cellar or wine barn. I guess I didn't see the point in that.

One family in Seattle lost their entire house to a fire. They rebuilt an entirely new house with an extra wing that was a mini bed and breakfast so this widow and her 3 daughters could earn income from their own home (that was a dream of theirs as well). Ty (the host) always has a special project he does for the family and it's usually the extra, seemingly unnecessary space that he creates for them.
