Need Suggestions

This REALLY off topic, but here goes: Henry, my cat slipped into a pan of motor oil that was in the garage. My best guess is that he was curious, put a paw in it and then skidded into it. His entire left haunch and hind leg is really coated with it, and he is a miserable kitty. I bathed him twice in Dawn and rinsed him thoroughly. I'm afraid that he will get sick if he tries to wash too much. He is an old guy, and my best buddy.
Any suggestions?

re-wash with a flea and tick shampoo
or
use a mild and gentle "human" shampoo
works with our 2

Betty, you might call the Audobon Society or some kind of animal rescue league and ask what they use to clean birds and sea mammals that have been caught in oil spills. Your vet might also be able to suggest something.

I would call the local emergency pet clinic or your regular vet. I guarantee you they will be able to give you more reliable information than anyone here would.

If its only in the hair, perhaps you could shave those parts of him....he might look funny for a little while, but at least he'll be ok.

You should probably also call your vet. Maybe they have some other types of soap or shampoo that could work. And you could find out what effects licking the oil off of his fur might have.
I hope your kitty is OK. Poor little guy.

Whenever I see them dealing with it on tv they do multiple baths in dish detergent. You may need to keep doing it. He'll just love it i'm sure.

Perhaps mix some Tabasco in the fur as well.....that way if he goes to lick himself, he'll likely quit after one lick. Sounds stupid.....but its a thought.

Dawn is what is used to get oil off of wild animals. It is safe for them and it works, so that was good thinking on your part, Betty. Does it seem like the oil is off?
Ya might want to try calling the education departments at Oakland or SF zoo and seeing if anyone is in. I know some of those folks and if they don't know the answer they can point you to someone who does. Also your vet or an emergency vet, although they probably won't tell you over the phone...money ya know.

Definately keep bathing him in Dawn. Target makes this great cat & dog shampoo called "Boots and Barkley" that smells like Pina Coladas and is a great kitty cleaner.
Keep brushing him with a slicker brush too, to work the oil out.
hope he's ok!

Just got here. Hope all worked out... Please let us know.
I agree to check with your vet and possibly poison control.
The Dawn was a good idea...They do use it to clean wildlife....

Definitely use Dawn. It's very safe on animals and it kills fleas and ticks too. You may have to "rinse and repeat" to get all the oil off though. I know from experience.

Another dunking in Dawn. He seems so resigned and docile. Not like he usually is. I've been babying him big time, and will call the vet tomorrow. I'm really concerned ... he's my baby, and since Jp has been gone, I talk to this stupid cat as if he were human. Am I crazy?
Thanks for all your suggestions!
