A must stop plus the drive is better than the other way. No worries about the "pass/don't pass zone". Too many people in a hurry on the "tourist route". Grouper fingers are most excellent along with your first cold one in the Keys!!! Enjoy - I'm ready for a long weekend down south....

DITTO!
And maybe Kathy Lee will show up to sing while you are there!
If you're heading down anytime between now and April, you would be a fool not to take Card Sound. Good deal of utility work going on right at MM 113. In the daytime there is only 1 lane open, and taking Rt. 1 will actually add about 20 minutes onto your trip, even with the extra drive along 905.
If you hit Florida City after 6:30 pm, you should be in good shape to head down Rt 1.
Alabama Jack's and Card Sound Road give you an idea of what the Keys used to be years ago...
AJ's has the absolute best conch fritters I have ever tasted and I got to see my 1st manatee in the wild while having lunch there one afternoon last November!
Allow some extra time though b/c once you get there, it's hard to get motivated to get back on the road...It puts you on Island Time for sure!!!

P.S. If I'm wearing any Crimson Tide gear do I get the royal treatment or do I get my arse kicked??
I would say a Stop is in order. This year I was heading for KW and trying to make it by 3p (building time into the schedule for accidents on the 7 mile bridge and the like) so I went straight down US1 and only stopped for brunch at Denny's at MM100.
Coming back, I really needed to get steeled for the jump back to mainland time at FL City and beyond, so I took the route up thru the forest and ended up at Alabama Jack's.
Sitting by the water, pipe fired up with good tobacco, Guinness in mitt, and Jimmy blaring on the sound system.. Golly. It was a great day.
You absolutely have to stop! I stop every year on the way down and the way back. I agree with everyone, they are by far the best conch fritters anywhere! Also try the Buffalo shrimp it's realllly good. Don't forget a Corona! Have fun, i'm jealous!
