I've played the piano for 30 years, classicaly trained, have perfect pitch and have written 60-70 songs that my friends and family love, have a song repetoire of over 300 songs, & years ago, I once opened for The Waitresses............ Other than that, I stopped gigging 4 years ago from depression......... Depression & stress will kill you..............

I talked about this in another thread. Alot of the folks we think of as great acts have some level of talent but aren't necesarrily the most talented in their genre.

The key is "acts".

Some of the best musicians are p***-poor entertainers. And some of the best entertainers are only mediocre musicians.

To succeed as an "act" requires some minimum sum total of musicianship, ability to entertain, charisma, appearance, passion, musical talent, uniqueness, catchy songs etc. The individual levels will vary from act to act but the sum total, when combined with luck and timing, will make them popular.

The Ramones for example certainly lacked in charisma and musicianship, but had an excess of passion, uniqueness and strong songs. The Backstreet Boys clearly lacked musicianship and musical talent, but they had charisma, appearance, performance and an ability to entertain their demographic.

The music industry is, first and foremost, the entertainment industry and as such is not solely about the music. That's why there will always be great musicians who never reach the mainstream.
