Thanks Renee!!! And you know we will. Victoria is quite a hostess!PHAW Webmistress wrote:Mal - If you decide to go with a rescue puppie check out Lifeline Puppy Rescue. This is where we got both Chase and Morgan. They are a no kill shelter and travel to the surrounding states to pick up litters of puppies that would have been euthanized. Needless to say you may have to make a couple of trips in order to find the puppy that is right for you - but the place is awesome. Here is the link to their website http://hometown.aol.com/irsqk9s/ Be sure to click on the link that tells you what puppies they currently have.
Good luck and be sure to have "Welcome home puppy party"

akc.org will provide a list of breeders of whom they "approve" if memory serves.buffettbride wrote:So...hubby won't hear of anything poodle, labradoodle or otherwise. He says he's too much of a man![]()
but in that process, he agreed to consider a lab which makes me VERY happy because that's what I wanted in the first place

He's also willing to consider the Ridgeback and English Boxer
Sooooooo I'm off on our search.
As we speak he's tearing out a tree with our neighbor so we can put the fence up over the next month or so.
WOOOOHOOOO!!!!
Thanks everyone so much for your help. If anyone knows of links to Lab breeders in Colorado it would be much appreciated. There's a gazillion links from doing a search on Google and I have no idea who is reliable and who isn't!
Now, something I suggest STRONGLY to everyone getting ready to get a dog-there are LOTS of homeless babies who could use a loving family at your local shelters. Probably lots of Lab-types, too. One of my few "soap boxes issues," so please forgive me.

Anything in the terrier group means that hubby could kick it farther than a football, therefore it is disqualified.Jimmy4pres wrote:We have two Rat Terriers and they are the best dogs ever. Loyal, friendly, protective of their family, smart, small and easy to train. Check them out.
But thanks for the recommendation. I had a rat terrier named Misty when I was a very young girl and LOVED her dearly...although she was very neurotic and knew how to shell sunflower seeds!

Auntie...I totally understand where ya coming from. But, as the "owner" of two small children as well, I'm not sure I want to risk not knowing what breeds make up our dog. I know we're definitely keeping our eyes on the shelters, but hubby (yes he's extremely difficult when it comes to this) is very adamant about a purebred, or at least knowing exactly what breeds make up the dog we get.phjrsaunt wrote:akc.org will provide a list of breeders of whom they "approve" if memory serves.buffettbride wrote:So...hubby won't hear of anything poodle, labradoodle or otherwise. I haven't read the entire thread, so my apologies if someone has already mentioned them, but how about an Irish Red & White Setter? Purebred, intelligent, patient, loving and absolutely wonderful with other animals and folks of all ages (including kids).

Great Danes are awesome! I used to have one.......another breed I would highly suggest is a German Shepherd. They are very intelligent, loyal, social, all around great family dogs. I unfortunately am having to place mine in another home because of my curent circumstanceslovin_jimmy wrote:you can always do what im doin, get a chihuahua and a great dane!!buffettbride wrote:So...hubby won't hear of anything poodle, labradoodle or otherwise. Check out Petfinder.com.......that is where I found my Milo. Here is link (I hope) to the rescue org's in Colorado. There's even a Lab rescue there..........

If that doesn't work, go to http://www.petfinder.com and click on the shelter/rescue groups tab at the top........

two types of Labs...English and American. By far the English breed is superior to the American..all the craziness has been bred out..mostly
, American breeders tend to over breed and have to some degree turned into a puppy factory. To tell the differnce..English labs have broader heads, snouts, stocky build..short front legs, bigger chest and otter type tails. The tend to be mellow, always willing to please and chew on french doors and furniture much less then their counterparts.

Wow! Everyone has been so helpful!
We really did look into a Great Dane. We both love them and have known a few that were just fabulous! Our main concern with those guys is the short life span of only 6-8 years.
I wouldn't mind a chihuaha for Victoria, but her little brother would probably sit on it
The setters look nice too! Options are good at this point and now we have soooo many to check out!
<-----still REALLY wants a yellow lab but has to compromise w/ hubby

Yup..short life span on bigger pooches....Setters are nice but tend to have skin problems..tend to be really hyper and their fur is heaven for burs etc.buffettbride wrote:Wow! Everyone has been so helpful!

I'm there with ya bumper. I just LOVE labs. The "Labradoodle" finally has BG nudged in the lab direction so there is still hope. But, we wouldn't be good pet owners or parents without a ton of research.bumper wrote:Yup..short life span on bigger pooches....Setters are nice but tend to have skin problems..tend to be really hyper and their fur is heaven for burs etc.buffettbride wrote:Wow! Definetly the best way to do it...we did a ton of research before making the leap.....we have always had dogs and each with their own good points and bad ones..but this lab is by far the most intelligent, mild mannered and lovnig pooch we have had the pleasure of adding to our phamily..good luck with the search.....!!!!buffettbride wrote:I'm there with ya bumper.
