So...hubby won't hear of anything poodle, labradoodle or otherwise. He says he's too much of a man   but in that process, he agreed to consider a lab which makes me VERY happy because that's what I wanted in the first place :D :D :D He's also willing to consider the Ridgeback and English Boxer

Sooooooo I'm off on our search.

As we speak he's tearing out a tree with our neighbor so we can put the fence up over the next month or so.

WOOOOHOOOO!!!!

Thanks everyone so much for your help. If anyone knows of links to Lab breeders in Colorado it would be much appreciated. There's a gazillion links from doing a search on Google and I have no idea who is reliable and who isn't!

You have some of the best Lab Kennels right around you. Let me know if you want the name of a couple.

Check out a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Short hair, sheds very little. One of the best family dogs out there. Excellent guard dog, meaning they know who belongs and who doesn't. Temperament is very similar to retrievers and labs, but much less hyper when puppies. I cannot say enough about this breed. Also, you can check into adopting a greyhound. They don't need alot of space, surprisingly. They tend to be somewhat lazy around the house, but temperament is perfect. Good luck!

Labs - hands down. All the good attributes of a Golden Retriever, but not quite so hyper, and less apt to chew a hole through your walls :D

can't go wrong with an English Bulldog. They are short haired, between 50-60 lbs (lil smaller for females) and one of the best breeds with children, really laid back. Plus they are the best looking...

here is a pic of my 10 month Bully AJ with his new boots...

I'm not sure about the non-allergic part of it but I had two Labs who were absolutely loyal and great with kids. They were pretty good watch dogs too.

The only preoblem with them is their life span is only 5-8 years. A good friend of mine just lost his. They are pretty cool dogs though.

I've got a black lab, they are great with kids, but they do shed a little. If you are looking for something that doesn't shed that is pretty big you could go with a standard poodle. Beagles are great with kids. I would do the breed selector quiz that AF posted its a good resource, but just my own two cents, I would check out your local shelters before seeing a breeder, a lot of times a mutt makes the best dog and there are a lot of them that need help. Good Luck

I would go for a Lab. We have a female black lab that is 12. She has always been awesome with kids and she doesn't bark, unless you call her a B!$#@ or a slut. There is a fairly new breed called a Labradoodle. There are also Goldendoodles. They are a cross between labs (or Goldens) and poodles. They are non allergenic and don't shed.

Couldn't go wrong with a yellow lab. Almost exactly like a Golden Retriever. Short hair, great temperament, great with kids, and easily trained.

Not sure if a Golden would irritate your husband's allergies if that is what you wanted to get. I have a Golden and my mom is usually allergic to animals. SHe has been to my house several times and her allergies have never been affected by him. I think a lot depends on how often you bathe it and also what type of shampoo you use on it.

Rule #1 Poodles are NOT dogs.
Rule #2 Anything in a sweater is NOT a dog.

the day it was taken it was about 5 degrees outside with 2 feet of snow. The salt on the roads irratate their paws. They do have a shorter lifespan than most dogs usually around 10 years.

Thanks Charlie! I think we've used one through Yahoo a time or two. I'll definitely check some of the suggestions out in there.

I LOVE LABS!!!! Yellow, black, or chocolate. All sweet and endearing. Those are high on my list....but I think hubby would need some persuading on one. They are truly the best dogs for kids, in my mind!!

I never thought about salt, they don't use it around here. They are really cool dogs. L
