Speaking from quite a bit of experience, hence the name INKED PARROTHEAD,my advice to you is do your home work, pick out a good artist with a reputable shop....and be careful with the chinese letter thing they are sometimes loosely translated and dont always mean what you are told,I have a large back piece, with a beach, ocean, palms,a carribean soul lizard(me),a pic of my wife in a sarong and bikini top, whales tale, half sunken pirateship and my childrens names scrolled in the sand all spread across my back looking like a buffett c.d. cover, plus a margaritta swilling parrott on my left calf....Im not quite done yet, they are addicting!!
Good Luck

On spring break a few years ago, I woke up with a raging hangover and a chinese tatoo on my back. My friend who was with me when I got it, wouldn't tell me what it meant, so it took me three days to figure it out.

I ended up going and looking at a bunch of different shops. I asked around the area and finally I found a guy who was nice, showed me his work and told me exactly what to expect. He knew it was my first tat, and didn't get annoyed when I asked him to take a break cause it hurt (it was a 2 1/2 hour piece). Check their work, and if possible former clients and make sure that they are certified and state inspected. Make them open the needle in front of you berfore the tat and break the needle in front of you when they are done. Umm thats all thats coming to mind now...

don't overthink it. Just go into a couple places and look at each artists work. If they're working in a shop and have been there for quite some time, they're going to be pretty good at what they do. Since the tatt you want is pretty basic, anybody would do it. But for future reference, a lot of shops have guys who "specialize" for a lack of a better word, in certain types of tatts. If it's a decent sized shop, they'll have 1 guy who's the best at portraits, 1 guy who's the best at fantasy stuff, 1 guy who's the best at tribal, and so on.
