I love Surf Music, although I must admit I am more a fan of the songs with vocals than the instrumentals. I love the Beach Boys (going 4/30 with my 7 y/o keet), Jan & Dean, The Fantastic Baggies, Bruce & Terry (Bruce Johnsons first hit), the Sunrays, etc.

But the true surf sound is instrumental. Nothing like that fender guitar. I love Los Straitjackets! I have the Cowabunga box set - got it on ebay I think 5 years ago.

As far at the beach movies go, I have a great LP with all the Frankie & Annette beach tunes - Muscle Beach Party, Secret Surfin' Spot and the rest. If anyone wants to PM me I can burn the record to CD and send it out. The album is a long way from brand new, but it sounds better than average.

One more tidbit... on one of the Disney compilations, a song called Monkey's Uncle is sung by Annette with backing vocals by the Beach Boys..I'll throw that one on too.

Next to Buffett, there's few things I find more relaxing than throwing on a CD of surf tunes and cranking up the blender to help remind me that warmer climes are indeed coming....

This album was my first exposure to surf music many, many moons ago. Cool to hear Pearl Jam cover their "Gremmie Out of Control" for the first Save Our Mother Ocean album.

The king of surf music DD rules. An absolutely awesome show if you ever get to see him. His son is a child prodigy and is admittedly better than his father. I love the other bands you listed, but you did miss out on the Eliminators, they often play before buffett shows at Irvine Meadows, and also the Mermen, who have played before buffett shows at Shoreline amphitheatre.

I recently emailed Rhino about the possibility of reissuing this box set. Here is the reply from Dr. Rhino:

We do not have current plans for this release, but thanks for your input. I'll forward your letter to our suggestion box.

Thanks. If I had known it was printed in limited quantities to start with I would have purchased it years ago. All of the copies I've seen on eBay are damaged and I'm simply not paying those kinds of prices for damaged goods (even if is just to the packaging).

Be sure to wish him a Happy Birthday!! :D
He turns 68 tomorrow!

Waaay back, I worked with an old surfing buddy of mine to produce a great concert idea "Surf Stomp '82" at Golden Hall in SD.
I got to limo up to Newport Beach to meet Dick Dale at his place right on The Wedge, at it was a mind-blowing experience for this 20 yr. old.
Dude could really party, too
We also had The Ventures ("Wipeout") on the bill, but, unfortunately, surf music was not popular with many back in the '80's.
The concert got cancelled that very night of the show! Only 84 tickets had been sold!!
My buddy split town, turns out he had spent all the sponsor's proceeds, and I haven't seen him since....
$#@&...only Vegas again?? Padres ...gotta start believin'!Bring on '14 Spring Training!

Were the Surf Punks on that bill? They had a following in So Cal in the mid 80s - or maybe it was just their Spoiled Brats from Malibu buddies :D

then you mean you hear Surf in punk.....

Dick Dale has been around way longer than what's called punk now

on that note, Dick Dale's and Stevie Ray Vaughn's Pipeline is the best instrumental ever 8)

Kinda sorta but surf definitely has a very heavy Spanish influence while punk has a lot of anger in it. Still, I can hear the connection. One band that mixes these influences pretty well is Shadowy Men From A Shadowy Planet. Though they downplay the "surf" angle to their music, it's most certainly there.
