A Jimmy Buffett iPod (Sort of)

Post by cartmill72 »

At Christmas I received the special edition U2 iPod. Apple followers will know this was not the first special edition as early on there were also Madonna, Tony Hawk and Beck. This got me to thinking, wouldn't it be cool if there was a Jimmy Buffett special edition iPod and iTunes could offer up "The Complete Jimmy Buffett" with all the included rarities. Ah, I'm dreaming now.

So today I sat out to create my own. I bought an iPod Shuffle and loaded 240+ Buffett tunes on it. I bought a lime green grip case for it. While there is no laser engraved signature, there is plently of island attitude flowing through the earphones. I still have my U2 iPod and another iPod shuffle (loaded with workout tunes), but I'm fairly certain my "BuffettPod" will get quite the workout through the spring and summer months.

My wife got it for me - had to be one of three places: MicroCenter, Apple Store or CompUSA. I'll check. At any rate, its made by MarWare and they are selling them online now, too.

I know there are lots of iPod users out there, but if you are looking to get something similar, IMO just as good, and cheaper, check the Dell DJ. Basically the same thing, only cheaper!

I won't even enter this debate. ;-)

But, no matter how you listen (iPod of Dull DJ), hours upon hours of Buffett where ever you go is a good thing.

Creative Zen Nomad at Circuit City

Post by Perry and Sarah »

As an aside I saw in the Circuit City sale paper today that they have the Creative Zen Nomad (30 gB model) for $189.00.

Would hold all the Buffett and Bob Marley I'd ever need, with room left over for whatever else I could think of.

Don't even try to go there. You must make your living working for Dell to make a comment like that. It's like comparing bologna with a New York Steak. End of subject.

Nope, I just really love my DJ. I would love the iPod just as much, but my pocket prefers the price of the DJ.

40 gig iPod Photo here..... I love the thing, have had several mp3 players before, hands down Apple iPod is THE best. Especially the photo edition, I carry all my Buffett songs and photos with me and plug it into a TV somewhere to play a slideshow with music! It rocks. Not to mention the battery life has lasted me up to 10 hours every time I use it :P

Fair enough. Like I said above, while 92% of the digital music listening world uses some form of iPod, it doesn't matter what you use as long as it has Buffett, Marley and Jack Johnson (and maybe a few others scattered in).

As for filling up Pods...I have my 20 GB U2 iPod near capacity, an iPod mini at capacity and 2 shuffles full. I checked the other day and I'm nearing 120 GB of MP3, AAC and lossless (SHN or Apple) on my "music" external hard drive. And yes, they are all legal. :-)

Speaking of Apple and JB - anyone else notice that License To Chill was never put out digitally on iTunes or Rhapsody? Anyone know why that is?

I've been wondering about this too. For a few months it seems like Jimmy and iTunes were all about one another (I know Jimmy's an Apple guy anyway), but Meet Me In Margaritaville got pulled from iTunes (there must have been some sort of rights issue) then the live stuff went on sale for 9.99, only to then be bumped up to normal price a week or two later, but then nothing. No Hawaii, no License, no Salty Piece of Land (not sure about the audiobook, but I know the song isn't there). We need to contact Mailboat, find out what going on, and tell them to tell Apple we want our Buffett back.

Is he an apple guy? I've seen him here and there with a laptop (pictures, Mini Matinee, etc) and they've always looked like thinkpads. Does he have a nice powerbook or something now? Love my iBook and iPod combo.

There are a few reasons for this (#1 is the main reason, #2 and #3 are additional possible hold ups)...

1) Obtaining the rights from the various labels and publishers was difficult with so many artists involved. If I recall correctly, some of his duet partners aren't represented at all on iTunes. (At least they weren't at the time of the release).

2) In addition, this album was released by Mailboat and distributed by RCA. This may have complicated the royalty issues. (These types of deals are not uncommon, but perhaps someone objected). I'm really not certain on this one - just a guess.

3) Its up to each label to digitize and submit the album to Apple for sale on iTunes. Its possible there was a dispute over who would handle this - RCA or Mailboat.

That's just the first one that came up in a google image search for buffett laptop. if you look harder, I'm sure you'll find a better one. It's from the SI Swimsuit Issue last year (he wrote an article for that issue).

I remember reading an article at least a year ago where Jimmy mentioned how much he loved his ipod. I'd love to see (hear) what he's got loaded. I think it was a RS article if I remember correctly.

I have not spent the money on an ipod yet, but a Buffett version with PTYD15YOGH pre-loaded would cause me to break into the piggy bank!
