I'm considering getting a blue/gold macaw in the future. Does anybody have a macaw that could offer some insight?

have patience my friend!!!

they are big

they can get loud

you need to make arrangements for the bird after you depart this earth - they often outlive their owners

UNLESS you are 100% committed to the LIFELONG care of this bird - don't do it.

Amen...they can be messy, they get stressed if they don't have companionship all the time, and if you have close neighbors or live in an apartment, they will all gang up and shoot you.

This much I know.

I don't foresee a problem with the life span of this bird (or should I say my life span). I've had indoor dogs all my life, at least birds you don't have to take outside to use the bathroom at certain times of the day

but thanks for your input :pirate:

Have you done much research on them yet? The larger macaws are big, loud, and can be pretty intimidating (or mean). If you're a first time bird owner, a blue and gold probably isn't your best choice. I've been interested in getting a bird for years now, but haven't had one yet. I'm actually saving up right now for mine. (another tip - go hand fed, weaned, from a reputable breeder) If you really want a macaw for your first one, you might want to get one of the one's I'm looking at - a mini macaw. There are the Hahn's Macaw, the Noble (subspecies of the Hahn's), the Yellow-Collared, and the Severe. I'm personally most interested in the Hahn's, but it's a matter of personal circumstances, etc. Hahn's is the smallest, Severe is the largest of the minis. Use google, lol.... :)

Some of it depends on the relationship you establish the bird, our phriend has an outstanding relationship with hers, not so great with the hubby

you can have ours.....she has about 70 good years of screaming, making a mess and demanding attention

I've done a little. My bro has worked in pet stores handling birds, including a couple parrots, so I have somebody to help me out.

As for being intimidating or mean, I'd think that's much like raising a dog...it's all about early socialization. I'll look into the mini's though 8)

I just google imaged all the mini's you listed....every picture was pretty much all green. Not what I'm looking for, the size would have been nice though

The Hahn's have some red feathers - also called the red shouldered macaw. Maybe you want to look at some other parrots? Seriously, I don't know one person who'd recommend a blue and gold for a first bird. They're beautiful, but a heck of a lot more work than you'd think.

I'm sure they're a lot of work, but I doubt no more than 2 highly energetic 50 lb Bull Terriers in an apartment

I was once bitten by a parrot.
'Tobey' the Green came close to relieving me of my right thumb.

I WILL NEVER TOUCH A STRANGE BIRD AGAIN!

I won't be in an apartment for that long....

I spent $1500 for my female Bull Terrier and flew to Ohio to get her, I spent $1250 for my male Bull Terrier and flew to Maryland to get him. Add in vet bills, crates, toys, food, etc....You get the idea.

Money isn't an issue.
