IF you listen to the Skynyrd live cd "One More For/From the Road" cd you will hear people yelling "Freebird" throught the cd. Ronnie Van Zandt ask what song it is that everybody wants to hear. The audience screams "Freebird". This concert had to be recorded in the mid 70's.

All of this is covered in the article? Did you just wake up on pg 2?

Here in "Freebird Country" we just yell, "Play some Skynyrd, man!"
(But not at the Freebird Cafe... That'd just be downright silly.)

this makes me think about Jimmy's cd done for the fund raiser in the Hamptons. . . .

some guy keeps screamin' out " FREEBIRD " and Jimmy finally says " Ronnie Van Zandt is playin' down at the (something ? ) - get your ass over there . . .I thought we'd play a little Jimmy Buffett tonight . . . "

way cool. . .this is the cd I offer to people to turn them on to JB. . .they all love it . . . and are always " hooked "

I was at a corporate function once where some geriatric semi-Dixieland-style band was playing music in the mode of Lawrence Welk, and I couldn't contain myself and yelled out, "Freebird!"
Our corporate auditor doubled over with laughter (and it ain't that easy getting an auditor to laugh, let me tell ya!). 8)

Lucky me!! I was at that show. We actually had 3rd row seats right on the center aisle. Definitley one of the best nights of my life!! :D That moron that kept yelling "FREEBIRD" was at all three (99, 00 & 01) of the East Hampton shows. The guy is a complete tool...

Not this story, but a similar one. I'm pretty sure there was another one too.

No. He invented it BEFORE the internet. :P
