Tailgaiting at Cinci and Indy
I was wondering whether the security at Indy is as harsh on tailgaiting as the claim? Is the tailgaiting at the campgrounds great? Finally, I heard Cinci also says no tailgaiting but I hear it's good. Just trying to decide which concert to attend. Taking suggestions

The venue parking lots didn't open until after 5:00 when I was there (2002). The tailgating at the campground started about two days before the show.jsteele2 wrote:Is the tailgaiting at the campgrounds great?

(although if you're only choice is between Indy & Cinci, then hands down go to Cinci... I've been to both)

Everyone has to visit the home of the term "parrothead" at least once. Last year, the tailgating was greatly improved. Indy was a tailgating disappointment. And I also agree-- GO TO ALPINEiuparrothead wrote:I concur.Hoosier PH wrote:Take my advise, go to Alpine!

I liked that one Big Hat, going to Cincy is like going to church. Everyone must make the pilgrimage at least once. May we all bow and face Cincy at 5:00 everyday.big hat carmen wrote:Everyone has to visit the home of the term "parrothead" at least once. Last year, the tailgating was greatly improved. Jsteele -- These posters are right on -- if you can make the trip, go to Alpine for the tailgating. One word of caution, though: If you want to see the first set, get an early start on what can only be described as a mass human migration from the lots to the venue entrance....its a bigtime bottleneck! (Unless things have changed since 2002)

Hope we get to meet up somewhere this year; we plan to go to Wrigley.

Don't think I'll be going back to Alpine if I can help it. Went a few years ago June 2 was freezing cold. People were smashed like sardines waiting to get in. The average age of security was about 16. Being a bit claustrophobic and my friend having an inner ear balance problem, we both had problems with the crush of people and the slowness to let us in. Had 4th row seats and missed half the first half because we were in first aid filing reports because of the crush of people. Ended up having to climb over railings to get to our seats.

Tailgating is discouraged at VWMC in Indy, but it does go on.jsteele2 wrote:I was wondering whether the security at Indy is as harsh on tailgaiting as the claim? However, VWMC is also one of the nicest amphitheaters in the country, and has yet to get skipped over. We actually got two shoes last year when other regular venues on the tour got none.
I have to been to Cincinnati as well, and love it there. The lawn area leaves much to desire though as most of it is "obstructed view" seating due to the pavillion support columns. Tailgating is good in Cinci though, and the pavillion has a more intimate feel than most venues.
If you are more concerned with the "party" aspect of the show, I would recommend Riverbend in Cincinnati.

I was at both Indy and Cincy last year. They allow serious tailgating only in the parking lot across the street from Riverbend. I think that started around noon. At Indy, they opened the gates at 3 pm and allowed tailgating, but no glass or grills. In the VIP parking area they hassled us because they wanted everyone in that area to attend their $40+ VIP buffet before the show. I nicely pleaded our case per the email trail I'd had from the venue saying tailgating was allowed -- they finally left us alone but it was a hassle.
As far as traffic goes, Indy is terrible because everything has to clear out on to one two-lane road. At Cincy, they have the infrastructure to manage the traffic better but I was nothing short of amazed at how stupid they were. There were only a couple of people directing traffic out on to the main road, and once you got there, the stoplight to the interstate was on its regular setting...you had thousands coming from one direction and almost no one from the other direction late in the evening, and you just let the stoplights do their regular thing???!!!
Even with all of that, both shows were fun.
