No flaying here. I agree completly with what you(and others here) have said. There are probably more conservatives here than we think.krusin1 wrote:Yes, you CAN be a parrothead and a conservative. A thought or two...
I actually wouldn't be surprised if quite a few BN'ers were actually conservative.
From what I have read of the posts, a bunch of you/us are self-reliant, take responsibility for your own actions (even when we act up!), believe in law and order - especially when it comes to people doing evil or stupid things (drunk driving) that can hurt others, don't wait around for the government to help/save us, would rather take risks and control our own destinies, believe in capitalism (Margaritaville empire, anyone?), and just generally would prefer for the government to NOT try to tell us what to do.
That, to me, ladies and gents... sounds like a conservative.![]()
(Ok, let the flaying begin.)
Can a Parrothead be a conservative

When the political discussion gets mixed with too much alcohol, the racism of my grandfathers generation starts to pop out. It is at this point I excuse myself. There is no point arguing with people who already know they are wrong.
My new father-in-law is one of those Bush-bashers too. I once simply told him "you are wrong" and got up and left. Problem solved, he has backed off since.
I would suggest before you abandon your family altogether you let them know your discomfort sometime when everybody is sober and request that the political discussion be reserved for before and/or after dinner when you are not forced to partake
It's good advice, but, as I said, I'm not really abandoning them altogether-I'll still visit them, just not all at the same time. Thankfully, my youngest sister understands, and has shown me respect.
I could (and probably SHOULD) tell the rest of them to can the political crap, but I know what kind of reply I'd get-"Oh, you know, your old Uncle 'So and So'-he just likes to start these arguments."
No thanks-been there, done that, got the t-shirt.
They know how I vote, therefore, I'm responsible for all of their problems. I don't need that-life is too short, and I intend to enjoy whatever time I have left.
But I really do appreciate your input-I think under normal circumstances your advice would work.
I am thankful to say the least I married into a family more conservative than I am. My father in law is a retired police officer and my mother in law works in the court system. My family minus my sister is very conservative as well, my dad was a police officer and a vietnam war veteran in the army and then later in the naval reserves. You didn't screw with him to put it nicely. We argue and disagree over pleanty of things, he hated me for years until the day I threatened to knock him through the sliding glass door last thanksgiving. Now we go in his backyard and shoot target practice a couple times a month

In 2 days I'm going to NC where I will get all the sweet tea I can drink. I won't have to ask. Pleasant servers will walk around saying, "how bout some more sweet tea?" Dang that stuff is addictive. And no matter how hard I try it never ever tastes the same when I'm not down south.

You want another good southern drink pick you up some cheerwine, puts cheery pepsi and cherry coke to shame. The furthest north i didn't have to specifically ask for sweet tea was Baltimore but it wasn't the same as drinking it in tennessee, north or south carolina. What part of NC are you going?OceanCityGirl wrote:In 2 days I'm going to NC where I will get all the sweet tea I can drink. I won't have to ask. Yep, I love the south.Amen!!!! I'm going down to NC in May and the first thing I want is a cup of sweet tea!
I'll give cheerwine a try too. But it'll just become one more addiction I won't be able to fuel unless I'm south. You want another good southern drink pick you up some cheerwine, puts cheery pepsi and cherry coke to shame. Ever been to the dune burger in nags head? You want a good mom and pop burger and french fries go there. Cheerwine is addictive, it is also available in diet. Not too terribly expensive about 3 to 4 bucks for a 12 pack, I personally suggest the 12 oz longneck bottle made with cane sugar instead of the processed junk they use nowOceanCityGirl wrote:Yep, I love the south.Amen!!!! My family doesn't discuss politics at family gatherings any more. If they did, I would leave. They don't just say, "I disagree with you".... They call names and get ugly.
Mac McAnally put it best, IMHO: No amount of talking can change a mind that's been made up.
