Mac McAnally put it best, IMHO: No amount of talking can change a mind that's been made up.
You been to my family reunions, Jen?

We don't discuss (1) politics or (2) religion . . . it gets ugly!!!

Lee, can I even be a liberal?
I'll ask for you at the next meeting.... we usually gather in the old growth forest and say Wiccan chants while the smell of patchouli wafts in the air. Then we hand out hoards of hard working Republican's money to a bunch of other lazy-ass hippies.

It's a good time.

I hate labels. I'm conservative about some thing and Liberal about others. I'm probably more of a Libertarian. Registered Independent. I don't think that Bush is the best man for the job but I don't think John Kerry was either. Don't like the religous right and I don't like Jesse Jackson. I think we need a strong 3rd party in this counrty. I think both parties are out of touch with the middle class man and woman. It scares me that the people who want to reform social security won't even be drawing it in their old age. Have you seen the retirement that that Congress and the Senate benifit from?

I think they'd take better care of social security if there was no congressional pension.

ROTFLMAO (and that's never happened before.)

You, my friend, are a rare breed. I haven't met too many liberals that are funny as hell. Glad you came to the party. :D

Sure they can. That's what makes us such a great group. Put a handful of us in a room and limit the conversation to politics and there would likely be some heated arguements, but fire up the blender, pop in A1A and all is good.

Perhaps I have lived a life that is far outside the normal for conservatives. From elementary through graduate school, I never experienced a teacher or professor trying to influence, or as many conservatives often put it, brainwash students with their beliefs. I tend to parallel these claims with the age old liberal media myth. I don't doubt it happens from time to time, but to hear conservatives talk, and I do listen to conservative talk radio also, you would question when teachers find time to teach between all their propaganda.

Wow.... How scary..... I agree completely. :o Especially about politicians being mostly out of touch.

I wonder if it's different in different parts of the country. Did you grow up in Tennessee? I grew up in the cradle of liberalism, Massachusetts, and I can tell you from first hand experience, the teachers definitely brought their beliefs into class. And lest you think that was a figment of my parents' imagination, I also grew up in a liberal family. :D However, THAT having been said, my parents are what I think of as old-style Democrats: they're liberal when it comes to gov't, but very conservative in their personal lives.

The teachers do the same thing today in my keets' classes......

Hey let me throw in an ITA. I'm also registered independent, more of a liberatarian. Unfortunately because most democrats come across as so off base I rarely find one to vote for. So I end up choosing reps. who I don't really agree with either.
I grew up in Philly in an Irish/catholic neighborhood and went to Catholic schools. Definitely democratic. Yet I never felt like a teacher tried to influence me or even wanted us to see his way until college. There i felt outnumbered. I've worked in alot of schools and never felt uncomfortable like I do in this one. When I get my cert this is not where I'll be looking for permenant employment.

In fact, now that I'm thinking of it.... maybe my parents are really libertarians..... I think my mother voted republican once, and pretty sure my dad voted for Ross Perot. :o :P
