Cameras in Vegas?

Post by Jimmy4pres »

T-16 days until the Vegas show (not counting today and the day of the concert).

Does the MGM Grand allow cameras? Cannot get a straight answer out of them. They tell me that they have yet to plan for a pre-concert show, and they do not answer my question about allowing cameras.

Any info? :D

You won't get a straight answer from MGM.

The folks that they have working security try to overcome ineptitude with attitude.

they're not allowed, but can you get them in and take pictures...sure can, just have to be careful...if the ushers see you they'll warn you or possibly take your camera...I have pictures of us on the floor at a show a few shows back...pretty cool...the lighting is poor for picture taking w/o a flash so once things get started its unsless, unless your real close

I was in Vegas last October for the JB shows and had no problem getting through security with a camera. I actually went to the trouble of stuffing my girlfriends camera down my pants and struggling to try and gracefully walk through security (for the first show)...only to notice that everyone else was carrying cameras in no questions asked. Of course, alcohol is a different story...they gave me the option of throwing out my Jack and Coke or quickly killing it without holding up the line...one guess how that turned out.

cameras

Post by Jimmy4pres »

My only concern is that my wife and I just bought an expensive digital camera. I do not want to lose that to security, or have to leave to bring it back to the room.

If you're going to take on in, take a cheap disposable. That way, if you lose it (or someone spills a drink on it) you won't have lost much.

Good point! Our seats are pretty close, but I don't want to bother. As Captain P's saying goes, I have a photographic memory, but am out of film!!! :pirate:

I managed to sneak in a digital camera last year. Then I found out where my seats were and I couldn't even use it. :( Oh well, it was still worth it. :D

I have not been to a Vegas show but I have had to "sneak" disposable cameras in a few venues. They are a good choice in case they are lost or damaged from falling down. I want to say I was once "patted down" at a show in Chicago. They didn't find the camera though

Disposable cameras are the way to go--just make sure you take a separate one for the show than what you use for other stuff. One year, I had a disposable camera I was using to take pictures of my friends and I tailgating. But, sure enough, I got caught with it going into the show and ended up having to throw it away. So I lost all the great tailgating shots.

Wow, that's interesting. When I went to the show there about a year ago (the only time I've been to a show in Vegas--I'll be going again next month), my wife and I were all set to chug down our drinks before going in, but the security guy said, "Hey, you paid good money for those drinks--might as well enjoy them." He let us right in with the drinks. They even had a sleeve of plastic cups they were handing out to people like me with beer because they didn't want people taking glass bottles in.

So here's my question for those who have been to multiple Vegas shows: which the way it usually happens? My tale of happy-go-lucky security wanting to make sure everyone has a good time? Or BeachBum's story of having to throw away alcohol (I'm sure that's what you did, right?  )?

in 2003 they just gave you a MGM cup to pour your outside drink in.

I think it might depend on what entrance you come in, if you enter from the casino they have cups, if you enter from the street they don't seem to be as accomidating

Bring a throwaway in as well. If they catch you pull a switcharoo and give em the throwaway.

We have been to many Jimmy concerts at the MGM. Cameras are not allowed, and you go through a metal detector before they let you enter the Grand Garden Arena. Some people still manage to get cameras in, but if you get caught they make you check your camera at the coat check. My suggestion is to take a disposable camera in. The only thing is, unless you have fairly close seats the pictures may not be worth the trouble. Taking drinks in has never been a problem, unless you have a case of beer in a plastic bag with you, like our friends tried last October. (it didn't go over well) Good luck and you will have a blast.

- we are going to the Hawaii concert this year - so we couldn't swing Vegas too. maybe September or October who knows?

This story was posted on April 27, 2003 and is a great story to tell when anybody asks about camera's in Vegas:
Donchuknow wrote:I just posted some photos taken from the SECOND ROW at the MGM (See Buffett Concert Photos - pictures #42-47)
First I need to tell you what we had to go through just to get these photos. I'll try to keep my story short...
I had won a pair of tickets to the Vegas concert on a local radio contest (trivia questions). Did I mention they were SECOND ROW SEATS!?
I had hoped I wouldn't have any problem getting my little digital camera into the concert to take a few shots because when would I ever be this close to the stage again?
After I set off the metal detector I was asked to step aside so they could use the hand held detector on me... oh great...
So, I played dumb. Checking my right side, it goes off. Guard says "What's in your pocket?". I say "Umm, my cell phone." 8)
Checking my left side (where the camera is), it goes off. Guard says "What's in your pocket?". I say "Umm, my other cell phone?" :o
"OK" she says, "I'll have to ask you to empty your pockets." Of course now there's no way out. I empty my pockets and say "Oh, I forgot... it's a camera!". They tell me I'm going to have to "check" my camera. (which is a royal pain in the ass because you have to go back to get it after the show.) I'm pleading not to have to do this. No good. So this other security guard, a elderly white haired man, says he'll escort us to the desk to check the camera. We keep trying to lose him in the crowd, acting like we don't know where we're going. We see that the turnstiles where you give them your tickets are right next to the desk. So... we decided to make a sharp left at the last second, give the nice lady our tickets. As soon as she gives us our stubs back... WE BOLT FOR THE ESCALATOR! No one followed us down the escalator so we figured we're home free. :D
Upon getting to the lower level, there's the white haired guard about 20 yards away from us! How the hell did he get down there so fast!?
He yells to an ARMED security guard "Get that guy! He's got a camera!!" (Jeez... you'd think we'd had a gun by the way they were acting.) The ARMED security guard runs right past us (obviously confused by all the Hawaiian shirts, not knowing WHICH guy in the Hawaiian shirt had the camera. I had taken my hat off to "blend in".) :D
So... we made it inside and managed to sneak off the few shots that I posted (see top of this story). The photo entitled "BUSTED!" is a classic. At least this guy just gave me a warning and didn't take my camera. The BIG guy behind him is Jimmy's head body guard, so I didn't want to push it too much!
One question... Does anyone recognize the two ladies in photo #47? (Tiki Hut Girls from Denver) They had snuck down to our seats from a few rows back while I was on another Margarita Run. We let them stay since they were so nice. They told us they were from Denver and had Tiki Hut costumes that they had worn in the contest earlier (which we saw on Parrotvision!). They also told their names... but... there had been MANY Margarita Runs that night...
Well... that's my (semi-true) story and I'm sticking to it!
Here's a link to the first photo
