When I've flown in for concerts before, I've always just bought some beer and a throw-away cooler after I got there. For Pittsburgh this year I'm thinking about checking a cooler on wheels with the airline as my suitcase. Do you think that will work?

Dont see why not. You can check just about anything. You might just have to duck tape it shut or put a bungee around it. Call and see. Sounds like a good idea.

I would call and check with the airline before making any big plans.

I've seen that done numerous times..........but wouldn't it just be easier to buy once you get there?

I've got too many coolers already, and I like the one I have. Plus I don't want to have to spend time looking for a cooler once I get there.

I've seen it done before with a lot of duct tape.
But the baggage smashers still did a number on it. It was thrashed....
It reminded me of that old Samsonite commercial where they throw
the piece of luggage into a monkey cage and let 'em loose!....

Or a
collapsible cooler that holds 36 cans?

We've checked full coolers lots of times (when they didn't have our drink of choice where we were going.) It leaked once, but if you're just filling it w/ your clothes, can't see a problem.

we have checked coolers many times for bareboating or when we rent in the caribbean. i would go with the one on wheels w/o duct tape. in the days prior to 9/11 they usually didn't check out what was inside. these days they check the insides so the duct tape is a waste. also, i wouldn't bother putting any beverages inside. just buy them there.

This is similar to the cooler I'm talking about. It should hold my beer as well as the ingredients for my boil. The lid snaps shut so I don't think duct tape will be required. I'll probably put my clothes in the cooler and my tailgate accessories in a double wakeboard bag.

My suggestion....bring some twine/packing string with you when you check in....you will possibly have to open when you go through security..or check bags...after it is checked I would run the string around it as an extra measure for keeping it shut

That's a good idea, better than using duct tape.

done this many times. . .only make sure you do secure it . . .I work for an airline and know first hand how they are handled. . . .
not pretty and certainly not " with care " . . . .
we usually pack clothes or tailgate supplies in it, then pack a carry on with with the beverages inside . . . comes in handy when the attendants are too slow with the bar cart . .

Blasphemy - NOTHING is better than duct tape.

Mine got pretty well beat to hell on the return from Colorado a coupla years ago. It had a snap lock like yours, but I taped it closed anyway. When it arrived at baggage return it had new tape on it, the snap lock was busted and one of the handles was missing. Luckily most of my belongings inside were intact (clothing, books, tapes, etc).
I don't think it ever made it onboard the plane -- they just dragged it along behind by a 50,000 foot cord.
If you love your cooler, leave it at home. (IMHO)
