Should I stay or should I go?
My wife and I have tickets to Pittsburgh on June 26. It's also her birthday. We have hotel reservations for two nights (we live about 4 hours' drive away) and the plan is to make a weekend of it.
However -- my youngest daughter (she's 9) is upset that she won't get to see Mommy on her birthday - even though we plan to celebrate it on the Monday when we come home. Taking her along isn't really an option at this point. We also have tickets to Toronto.
My question is: Should we go to the concert, or should we sell the tickets and stay home?

If your wife WANTS to go to the show, then take her. If she'd rather stay home, take your daughter.Demerara wrote:My wife and I have tickets to Pittsburgh on June 26. It's also her birthday. I say you should go. It is your wife's birthday afterall. But I think I can understand your apprehension, do you think your daughter could handle this? Giving in to her may not be any healthier for her if you stay (always giving in to their wishes, yada yada yada). I would go with your's and your wife's gut instinct as far as whether you should stay or go - do you think you can go and have a good time and not feel like bad parrents? You should.
I'll be leaving my 18 mos. old to travel 4 hours to stay 2 nights in Pittsburgh for our anniversary which is on the 26th - and I can not wait!

I agree with the other posters with the caveat to make special plans *before* you go to the concert to have a family b-day celebration w/ daughter included. I think 9 is definitely old enough to understand. I'd probably do the same with my 7 year old (who would likely have the same reaction of wanting Mommy home on my b-day).

GO!!!!
Kids need to understand that they're not the center of the universe, and 9 is old enough to start.....
Heck, I left my then-8 year old for 10 months when Uncle Sam came calling, and lo-and-behold he survived.
I think if you can have a party before you leave, it'd take the sting out for your daughter. Heck, you could make it fun that she's so special she got to celebrate Mom's birthday before anyone else!
