You Had To Be There: Endless??!

Post by Parrot Monkey »

I just got finished listening to both vinyl LPs form the YHTBT album that I picked up at a used record shop on Friday. At the end of the 4th and final side, I was in for a surprise when I discovered that there was no end to it! :o I guess the engineer had a little fun and put clapping noise into the runout grove, so it doesn’t end until you pick the needle up! The only other album I know of that does this is the first pressing of Sgt. Pepper, which has clips of annoying Beatle chatter in there. Like the Sgt. Pepper CD, the clapping noise on YHTBT plays a little and then it fades on compact disc, as it is impossible to replicate the whole “endless” thing on CD.

I have an ABC/Dunhill promo pressing, I don’t know if it exists on the MCA version or not.

A minor detail, but I never seen this mentioned before here so I thought I bring it up.

I never noticed that! I'll have to see what happens when I play it.

I guess if your turntable has an auto return, you might miss it. It was weird, Dixie Diner was finished and I was waiting around for it to fade as on the CD, when I realized it was going on for quite a while. And there was the needle sitting in the final groove...

As I said, CDs don't have runout grooves, so its impossible to make it endless on the format, so they had to change that part and have it fade. I'll have to give the CD another listen to see what happens there, but I believe the clapping plays a few times as the fade starts.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this altercation was first made on the MCA re-pressing of the vinyl before the CD came out. The runout grove of Pepper was discontinued after the first pressing (and on all American pressings).

For those of you out there that may be Def Leppard fans, their "High and Dry" LP does something similar. The last song on side 2 is titled "No, No, No", and the lead out groove will sit there and repeat "No, No, No, No,..." (you get the point) until you lift the needle. That's another one to add to the list! :D

Hank Hill : Just in case I'm incapacitated for some reason, do you know how to start a man's heart with a downed power line?

Bobby: No.

Hank : Well, there's really no wrong way to do it.

"Theme From Boat Weirdos" on one of Joe Walsh's albums (There Goes The Neighborhood?) has one of those endless groove things going on. I know there's others but that's the first one to come to mind. Not that it doesn't do it but I never noticed it on my copy of You Had To Be There.
