It's been over 2 years since we have seen a Shuttle roll out to the launch Pad...knowing JB is a space buff and has visited KSC several times for launches, I thought I would post this. Planned launch date is May 15th. If you have never witnessed a live launch, I highly suggest it. Won’t be too many more Shuttle launches…good reason to come to Florida and hang on the beach, pour yourself and cold one and celebrate a launch.

how long of a haul is it from panama city to the cape? I am always surprised to hear how long it takes to drive places in flordia so I thought I'd ask...I'd guess 5 hours?

I'll happen to be there that week, but I'm not sure if I'll be up for it after driving 1000 miles down there just days before...

I haven't seen the shuttle..but when I was a kid, and we lived down there? My dad worked on all the Apollo shots ....
seeing them was incredible...and when they would launch satellites at night? We would stay up and have a block party...always fun and just beautiful!
hmmmmm...time to visit Satellite Beach again?????
ps...hey Alden!!!

In Jan 2002 I got to see a Titan Rocket blast off. The Titan is the largest vehicle they launch from the Cape. It was supposed to take off late in the afternoon, but got pushed back to make it a night launch. What a sight! We watched from the banks of the Indian River. If you ever get the chance to see a launch of any type, GO! You will not be sorry.

and who was it who sang, "We spend ninety jillion dollars tryin' to get a look at Mars.."??

I bet Jimmy would love to fly one of those shuttles. I will probably actually watch this lift-off in May!

Just out of curiosity-why won't their be too many more shuttle launches?

After the Columbia accident President Bush came out with the new Moon/Mars NASA Vision and it was decided to just use the Shuttle to finish building the Space Station and develop new vehicles for return trip to the Moon and the on to Mars. There are approximately 25 planned Shuttle missions remaining - 5 to 6 a year. They are going to try and retire the Shuttle in 2010...Guess Jimmy will never get that ride he wanted!!!

It's quite an amazing sight...if and when you plan on coming let me know and I can let you know the best places to watch it. Before 9-11 we were able to hand out car passes that would let you out on the base just a few miles from the Pad....(and some of the best places for margarita's!!!!)
