High School Parent Shoots Coach
The Athletic Director at my wife's school knows the coach that was shot. He considered going to work as this school's football coach over the summer.

CANTON, Texas - An East Texas high school football coach was shot on the campus Thursday by a student's father who claimed to have a hit list. Schools in the district were locked down while police searched for the shooter.
Gary Joe Kinne, who is also the Canton High School athletic director, was shot at least once and airlifted to a hospital in nearby Tyler, Don Martin, spokesman for the Tyler Police Department told The Tyler Morning Telegraph.
Information on Kinne's condition was being withheld at the request of Canton police, said John Moore, spokesman for Trinity Mother Frances Health System in Tyler.
The Governor's Office of Homeland Security identified the shooter as Jeffrey Doyle Robertson, a father of a Canton High School student. He fired an AK-47 and fled the scene in a 2004 black Dodge pickup.
Robertson had other weapons in his truck and had made a statements that he had a hit list and would not be taken alive, said Sophie Yanez, a spokeswoman for the state Homeland Security office.
Kinne reportedly was shot at the school's athletic field house in Canton, about 60 miles east of Dallas.
Amanda Sheperd, owner of Backwoods Bar-B-Que in Canton, said she was alarmed when she heard about the shooting because her ninth-grade grandson, Ty Sheperd, plays baseball and has a class in the fieldhouse. She believes he had left the fieldhouse and gone to band class before the shooting.
"I talked to the school just now and they said the kids were taken care of, and they're not letting anybody in or out," said Sheperd, who was continuing to serve lunch customers as news helicopters hovered overhead the school about a half-mile away. "The guy's on the loose, so they're out looking for him."
Kinne took over as Canton coach after leaving Mesquite High School before the 2003 season. His son, G. J. Kinne, was the AP 3A All-state honorable mention quarterback last season.

It was a pleasure and a hell of an evening
Truly was our night to win
But the authorities insist on my leaving
Take care my American friend

Yeah, but I've been physically threatened by a parent before over his daughter's playing time... so this story is really scary to me.PHBeerman wrote:It's Tejas, everyone is a little "Off" down there.iuparrothead wrote:Great... Agreed, DKD, but parents also need to stop living THEIR lives vicariously thru their children. I see this every stinkin' day at school...and I'd say more than half are involved in sports and other activities that they don't really want to be in but their parents are making them participate. Then they keep them out of school so they can catch up on all the work they owe since they don't have time to do it because of all the activities. GEE, I'm surprised we haven't been bombarded by all the gun control freaks on this one.
However, I definately agree with the last two posts (by D.K.D. and B.E.G.)-parents ABSOLUTELY need to chill the f--k out, and QUIT living their lives through their children and let the kids be THEMSELVES!
Hopefully when the catch this c--ksucker, they'll give him some real, honest-to-God TEXAS justice.

My mom was awesome. She never made me do things I didn't want to do, save for chores, and really supported me when I did want to do something.

I'm kind of mixed about this. Elizabeth and I were talking about it the other day. She grew up doing just about every sport available. I was allowed to join and quit sports at a whim.Brown Eyed Girl wrote:Agreed, DKD, but parents also need to stop living THEIR lives vicariously thru their children. To this day, she is more goal oriented than I have ever been. She sees life as more of a competition and challenges herself to do better. Myself, I just kind of go where the wind blows me.
If I ever have children (which is a scary thought), I would much rather them to have that drive to be the best. I never got that motivation because I was always allowed to quit.
It's your world, I'm just living in it!
I was threatened by a father over the phone once because I would not play his son in the position that he thought his son should play. He came to practice the next day and was as nice as could be.iuparrothead wrote:Yeah, but I've been physically threatened by a parent before over his daughter's playing time... so this story is really scary to me.PHBeerman wrote:It's Tejas, everyone is a little "Off" down there.iuparrothead wrote:Great... There's a difference between your parents forcing you to stay with one thing, and another forcing you to DO everything and stick with it.land_shark3 wrote:I'm kind of mixed about this. I tell my son that if he doesn't like something, he doesn't have to play NEXT YEAR he signed up for it, and he will finish what he started.land_shark3 wrote:I'm kind of mixed about this. I laugh because I can always point out the fathers that will be the problem. They are always under 6 foot tall. That is why men under 6 ft should not be allowed to breed.
