If Big & Rich is the future of country music ,then I would say that country music is in big trouble.

Big & Rich are just the newest version of Neal McCoy and Mark McGuinn. We all know how popular they are today...

But God help us all if this becomes a reality.

Yeah, and why is "Big" trying to look like Tom Petty? :o

as much as people say a lot of country sucks today, try listening to some old stuff. Not all of it was great.
Heck even Conway Twitty was cookie cutter with his image so what's the big deal? Same with Don Williams.
From Red Sovine to C.W. McCall, some of it is quite laughable.
And god bless Hank Williams Sr, and maybe he was good way back in the day but listening to him now is painful to the ears.
Personally I grew up on the 80s stuff from Alabama to Juice Newton, Ronnie Milsap to Oak Ridge Boys. I like the outlaw stuff from Bochepus to Willie, Waylon to Merle to David Allan Coe etc.
I did not listen to a lot of country in the 90s and only a few years back I got reaquanted with country music and I like a lot if it.
At first I liked Big and Rich but now they're getting irritating to me with the cowboy rap stuff. Heck I saw Cowboy Troy's video on CMT the other day
Sure cookie cutter still exists today as it always did but the bottom line is if the song sounds good, it sounds good, regardless of image.

I agree with you on that. I really enjoyed country music of the 80's. Really liked George Strait, Randy Travis, Reba, Hank Jr, Sawyer Brown,...could go on. I don't like some of the new stuff in country that sounds like rap or rock and roll. I like all types of music. I just think country should be country.

There's plenty bands out there playing country music but not all of them get played on CMT or country radio such as The Old 97s, Tift Merritt, Ryan Adams, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Two Dollar Pistols, Laura Cantrell, Son Volt, The Gourds, Nanci Griffith, The Derailers, Steve Earle, Tres Chicas, Neko Case, Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, Kasey Chambers, Peter Rowan, Leftover Salmon, Chatham County Line, Kathleen Edwards, Trailer Bride, Waco Brothers, Rob McMurlin, Wilco, Jim White, Slobberbone, the Backsliders, Iris Dement, Star Room Boys, Mary Gauthier, James McMurtry, Todd Snider, Donna the Buffalo, Whiskeytown, Kelly Willis, Josh Rouse, Hayes Carll, etc. On the upside, satellite radio recognizes these artists and prominently features them as part of their format. XM Radio has X-Country and Sirius has a channel called Outlaw Country totally devoted to music deemed too noncommercial for regular radio. There's real country music being made out there but you're going to have to do a little searching to find it. No Depression magazine is also an excellent place to start.

And lots, lots more. They're just too numerous to mention all in one post but Tim Easton is another one I highly recommend.

BR-549 are great! When I worked for the Grand Ole Opry, I worked with one of the guy's girlfriends, so the band played a lot of our plaza shows and other events. They are really cool, not to mention a great show!

When I first heard Reckless Kelly they were trying too hard to sound like Steve Earle (and dress like him if you look at their early publicity shots). Nowadays the Earle influence is still there but it's not nearly as predominant which is a good sign that they're coming into their own.

To me, it's real simple: if I like it, I like it.
If I don't, I don't. That goes for music, art, food, etc.
another version of that is: if it feels good, do it 8)

There's room for everybody. Today with internet, satellite radio, as well as the mainstream stations you should be able to hear what you want. I like Big and Rich, but I also listen to plenty of older stuff as well as new things that I would call more pure country.

Dear folks,

A few weeks ago, due to my broken vehicle cd player and resultant radio frustration, I was compelled by some unknown, but irresistable force to write a bitterly sarcastic typical Nashville country hit. Unfortunately, on the way to work today I heard one of my recent musical heroes, Keith Urban, singing almost that exact stupid song, in demographically-driven intent anyhow, on the radio. Man. I know the girls love Keith Urban. And I know he wants to be a success after stumbling through the dives for years and years. But really, Keith, give me a break.

If you think you have the stomach for it, check the lyrics online to "You Can't Hide Beautiful". One of the most transparent efforts of all time to sell records to a target demographic. Even for mainstream country. I thought I was kidding in that stupid song I wrote. Apparently I was not.

Excuse me. I have to go take something for this saccharine headache I've somehow developed.

Disgustedly yours,

Fern
if your friend Fern was refering to Keith's newest hit "Making Memories of Us" (which i believe Fern is referring to) it was written by Rodney Crowell, so you can place the blame on him

I saw them at the second Austin City Limits Music Fest a couple of years ago and have been hearing a lot of their new stuff on XM's X -Country channel. Like I said, it sounds like they've improved a lot since I first heard them. Still, I haven't felt compelled to pick up one of their records. Yet.
