Is there anything wrong with wanting to be like Jimmy Buffet

Post by phansheridan »

Everyone complains that Kenny Chesney, JJW and others are nothing more than buffett rip offs, Is there anything wrong with wanting to be like Jimmy Buffett, if your a rock star or even just a normal person hes not a bad person to follow, first off he loves his job and going to work, hes happy with his life, hes successful, has enough money to do whatever he wants, and millions of people look up to him, plus after reading a Pirate Looks at Fifty the man hasnt really had a bad life either, and picture being able to sit down at a bar and have some of those stories to tell. So Is there anything wrong with wanting to be like Jimmy Buffett?
Both shows at Greatwoods in June
Seattle and Vegas in October

Girlfriend doesn't realize that shes going to be a parrothead by the end of this summer whether she likes it or not.

I've never heard anyone say that JJW was a Buffett ripoff. They have been friends since Jimmy's early days. JJW has spent some time in the Carribean(Belize) and has written about it. But as far as I know-JJW has never been compared to Buffett. Chesney has been unfairly compared to Buffett. He has listed Jimmy as a musical influence, and he also lives in the Islands part of the time. He writes, or sings about what he knows, and is inspired by. Once again-Jimmy Buffett is not the only person allowed to write, or sing about the 'Great Escape' to the beach life.

If you have no interesting stories you can tell about your own life, a person needs to look deeper within and find out who they are and what their God given talents are in life........Yeah Jimmy Buffett is one of my favorites, but he's just a regular guy who worked hard to have achieved the status of where he is today............. So look inside yourselves and do a little soul searching & reminising of your life................ I'm sure there are some cool stories that could still be told and some yet that have not happened................

No, there is nothing wrong with trying to be like JB. My problem with a certain person that you mentioned is not so much with him, but with his fans who think that when JB quits touring, for whatever reason, that the parrothead nation will all start flocking to his shows and that he will inherrit JB's audience. I strongly disagree with that notion.

But, as far as trying to be like JB. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I so totally agree with this statement Pirate! Maybe some of the younger and less purist fan might do that, but for the majority of us, I don't think that we would lean that other way....

I guess I would agree with it "if" I ever heard his fans say that but I have not heard that. Why does everyone make it a competition?
Believe it or not there are other alternatives to Jimmy. Being a purist does not mean that you strictly listen to Jimmy and no one else.

Yup. I love Jimmy's music, but there's no way I could listen to all Jimmy, all the time. Need some variety in there.

There's an old quote, probably apocryphal, where Cary Grant was supposed to have said even he wished he could "be Cary Grant".

No question, on that one. Jimmy does acknowledge the "crab trap of life" and that "every now and then, the dragons come to call".

Still, there's a lot to be said for working hard, loving the work you do, respecting people along the way, and having something to show for it.

thats the great thing about a story at a bar, they should all be titled 'semi true stories' and if you need to make a few parts up, go right ahead, persoanlly if i am sitting next to you at a bar i dont care if it true as long as its entertaining. like this one time when i was on the hood of a cop car with my golf spikes on...

Golly, that's soooooo true. Entertainment factor rates with me waaaaaay above believability in a situation like that . . . Some friends of mine even have "tour personae" that they don when they are on the road -- fake names, fake lives and tons of stories. The only rule is: No one gets hurt.

My buddies & I used to do that when we were young(er)... Like the time we were in Vegas and told everybody we were former Playboy centerfolds. Doubt anyone believed us, but it sure was fun being "Miss April 1981".

Now, somebody tell me why I think I'm too old for that stuff anymore?
