Does anyone know which Grateful Dead album Scarlet Begonias is on? It wasn't on there Greatest Hits cd that came out last year, but I know a most of there stuff is being re-released. So far I only have the Jimmy Buffett and Sublime versions of the song, but I've been looking into expanding my Grateful Dead cd collection.

Most true Deadheads only have Bootleg shows in their collection. I could tell you what shows it was played in.

Most Parrotheads wouldn't be snotty and maybe take a little time out of their day to help a fellow PH out.

You can find Scarlet Begonias in the Grateful Dead box set or on the album The Closing of Winterland. It's prolly in other places, too, but those are the ones I know of.

Thank you, and have a nice day.

I believe the first studio album it was on is From the Mars Hotel.

It's also on Box of Rain.

Not being snotty, actually I was looking through my show sets, and others to find it for him while you posted that. But come to think of it, a little cold seems to be settling in, so perhaps I am a little snotty. Got a klenex :)

Bear with us, td. We're a very "generous" group. You'll almost always get more than you ask for.

Getting ready for morning shower, the steam causes a regular snottfest factory. I think I'll put on Scarlett Begonias, the long live version, and fill the tupperware with snotlett boogers for anyone that wants some. :)

I am not worthy, Boston Fins, you are a true Dead Head, or a person with way too much time on your hands. You brought back many memories of Dead shows. I still miss the days of needing a password to get down on the floor with the "Faithful", brownies is the parking lot, mail order tickets to sidetrack the scalpers, the twirlers that are still dancing in my head making me dizzy, although I do not miss the naked people, or the naked drum circles, some things just freak me out. Naked, unbathed hippies, freaked me out. Or maybe it was the brownies.... I saw a mere 55 shows, whimpy by Dead standards, but I actually made several of the recorded shows on your list. You did a great job of covering all the published recordings of Scarlet Begonias less the "Files form the Vault" DVDs. There must be an additional 1000 or so bootleg recordings from various shows as well.

For those interested, the Dead were one of the first bands that made an honest attempt to eliminate scalpers. Their mail order ticket system insured that tickets stayed in the hands of the fans. The "faithful" did their part by never charging more than face+fees, and they never bought tickets from scalpers, even chasing scalpers away from the parking lot and surrounding areas. Scalpers knew they were not welcomed and for the most part, stayed away. On several occassions "I need a miracle.." and a Dead Head gave me free a free ticket.

Man do we miss Jerry. Jerry by the way was a big Parrothead, and could often be spotted in the first few rows at a JB show. One of my best JB show memories was at Shoreline, 3rd row with Jerry sitting two rows in front of me. Thanks Bostonfins, you made my day.

FFishstick,

You're so right about the Grateful Dead's mail order system. In fact, they still do it today for the side project bands as well as The Dead shows. I never paid more than face for any GD show...ever! I attended over 100 GD shows (also wimpy compared to a lot of heads), have over 300 complete shows, and miss Jerry tremendously! I love the fact that JB plays "UJB" and "Scarlet". It's a nice little nod to JG.

Scarlet Begonias was played 316 times by the Grateful Dead between 1973 and 1995.

Glad to bring a smile to ya! :P

Saw the Dead at Shoreline last year, not the same, but better than nothing. The best ever was seeing the Dead twice in one Day. The Dead and Jefferson Airplane played a free concert at the Polo Fields in San Fran, and then the Dead played that same night at Shoreline. We packed 10 people in a Suicide Lincoln Continental and made the roundtrip. Our journey began at 8:00 am and ended somewhere before sunrise the next day. Jimmy, are you listening, we need more outdoor shows. If you ever end this trip you are on, you need to think about an all outdoor, festival type setting, a free all outdoor farewell tour. I am sure the Polo Fields in San Fran would accomodate you and your Phans.

I'm a longtime Grateful Dead fan (Workingmans Dead was one of the first albums I ever purchased way back in the early 70s) but I only saw 5 shows and I prefer the studio material to the majority of the live stuff. The best post-Jerry show I've seen was the first incarnation of The Other Ones but the press seems to have forgotten about them even though they cut an album under that name (Only The Strange Remain). I saw The Dead last summer and other than a few songs, I was not at all impressed even though Branford Marsalis sat in for their entire set.
