Police: Man Spits on Jane Fonda

Post by Sam »

Why is he arrested and charged? How many who did similiar acts to those returning from Nam were never charged? or threw feces or blood or what not? I am severely p*** OFF about this!

She apologized????What a JOKE!!! She only apologized cause of some movie she was filming and vets were urging everyone to run lawn mowers and what not while the movie was being filmed....How many years did she wait to make that apology? How many men suffered mental anguish and /if not more at her conduct?

She has no clue or idea what she sid or the harm she caused!!!
What would they do to the man and men and women who was/were there and risked his and their all and no doubt lost friends and more there in SEA???

THEY SHOULD give him an award for his courage. To treat such a person and return the favors that she gave to the men and women, in such manner....personally I doubt I would bother to pee on her if she was on fire......but then again I probablly just MIGHT to show her how wrong she was!

Then again I probably would not...she had full knowledge of what she was doing and was doing so of her own FREE WILL!!! Suffer as she will.......

Let us see how unforgiving she really is.....how many people lost their lives and hope because of her support of and for the enemy??? One is more than enough! And I am QUITE DAMN SURE THERE WAS MORE THAN ONE.......

BTW I take it, that the reporter did not understand the meaning or the reference to "Jody" as in the Jody calls that are done in the military...

Police: Man Spits on Jane Fonda
Apr 20, 12:57 PM EST

Associated Press

KANSAS CITY -- A man spit tobacco juice into the face of actress Jane Fonda after waiting in line to have her sign her new book, police said.

The man ran off but was quickly caught by police Tuesday night and charged with disorderly conduct.

Fonda has been on tour and doing interviews to promote her just-published memoir, "My Life So Far." The thrice-married, two-time Academy Award winner covers a wide array of topics, including her 1972 visit to Hanoi to protest the Vietnam War, during which she was photographed on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. She has apologized for that photo, but not for opposing the war.

Capt. Rich Lockhart of the Kansas City Police Department said that although Fonda did not want to press charges against Michael A. Smith, 54, of Kansas City, he was arrested on a municipal charge of disorderly conduct after off-duty officers caught him just outside Unity Temple, where Fonda was signing books.

Lockhart said Smith was released on bond late Tuesday night and is due to appear in municipal court on May 27.

Smith, a Vietnam veteran, told The Kansas City Star on Wednesday that Fonda was a "traitor" and that her protests against the war were unforgivable. He said he normally does not chew tobacco but did so Tuesday solely to spit juice on the actress.

"I consider it a debt of honor," he told The Star for a story on its Web site, www.kansascity.com. "She spit in our faces for 37 years. It was absolutely worth it. There are a lot of veterans who would love to do what I did."

Fonda drew a crowd of about 900 for her appearance, said Vivian Jennings, whose Rainy Day Books of suburban Fairway, Kan., sponsored the event at Unity Temple in Kansas City. Fonda, 67, spoke for about 15 minutes, answered questions for another 15, then began signing copies of her book.

Jennings said Fonda received a standing ovation when she came out and when she finished speaking. Alan Tilson, one of those who had his book signed but left before the incident, said the crowd was very "warm and supportive" to Fonda and he was surprised to learn what had happened.

Jennings said the actress never got up from her seat and continued autographing books after the tobacco juice was wiped off.

"The important thing is that she was so calm and so gracious about it," Jennings said of Fonda.

"She was wonderful."

Jennings said that the man had a book to which the name "Jody" had been affixed as he approached to have it autographed. She said that when Fonda got the book, she looked up and said, "You're not Jody."

"At that moment, he turned his head quickly and spit a trail of tobacco juice," Jennings said. "He immediately jumped off the stage and started running down the aisle."

Fonda, who flew to Minneapolis Wednesday for another appearance on the book tour she began April 5, issued a statement through Jynne Martin of Random House, which published her book.

"In spite of the incident, my experience in Kansas City was wonderful and I thank all the warm and supportive people, including so many veterans, who came to welcome me last night," Fonda said.

For those of us who are a bit younger; could someone give us an unemotional recap of the history of "Hanoi Jane"?

I am not sure what you want to know....you have the internet. You can do a search and find out more easily.

But to make it simple:
For starters:
She aided and abetted our enemy at the time.......She had several pictures taken around a NVA antiaircraft gun...Not to mention other conduct at the time that was less than helpful or supportive of OUR Troops.
Roll with the punches, play all of your hunches...come what may...

Thank you. That is actually exactly what I was looking for.

Google came up with "about 290,000" references. I knew someone would be able to save me some time.

...Fonda's tour of North Vietnam in 1972, during which she cozied up to the enemy, posing for photo ops with communist troops and broadcasting anti-American propaganda over Radio Hanoi. She also participated in a staged press conference with American servicemen held captive by the Viet Cong, the purpose of which was to "prove" that the POWs were not being mistreated by their captors. Years later when the released POWs described the very real torture and degradation they suffered at the hands of the North Vietnamese, Fonda called them "hypocrites and liars."

Here are pictures of her, an American traitor, sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun... A gun used to shoot at/shoot down American aircraft.

Lest anyone think I am merely being reactionary and hot-headed, I have spoken personally with at least five Vietnam POWs who tell of being tortured as a direct result of Hanoi Jane's visit to North Vietnam. These men were my classmate's fathers and my instructors at the U.S. Naval Academy. In my company alone, there were three guys whose fathers had been POWs. This is no kiddding, no urban legend: Jane Fonda was a traitor who provided aid and comfort to the enemy during a time of war.

Let's be realistic about her involvement back then.... she was just YOUNG and DUMB

Do any of us really believe we made a lot of brilliantly wise choices in your early adult years?? OF COURSE NOT!
Jane Fonda was riding a popular subculture wave and just thought it would be COOL to be seen with a "kind and gentle" enemy. Boy, WAS SHE DUMB!!! :-?
Has she regretted it since??.... sure
Did she deserve to be spit on?? ......SURE!

She was 34 years old.

And I don't give a SH*T whether it was "cool." Popular culture would have been to be marching in the streets of Washington DC. Making broadcasts in Hanoi was traitorous.

She has said it was a mistake to sit on the AAA gun. But she also said this:
Fonda, whose memoir “Jane Fonda: My Life So Far” comes out next week, said she did not regret meeting with American POWs in North Vietnam or making broadcasts on Radio Hanoi.
Those meetings resulted in the torture of Americans. Fact.

And she has never said, "I'm sorry."

Young? No.
Stupid? Maybe
Traitorous? Absolutely

I'll bet that it's a month before Michael A Smith is able to pay for his own drink at the VFW hall.

I don't think you or Sam were "reactionary or hot-headed" in your definition of what happened. While I had heard of some things that went on, not all of us were around yet. For the benefit of all us, I just wanted a "Reader's Digest" version.

Thanks to both of you for the quick synopsis.

Not directed at you, LS3. But this is a hot-button topic on both sides of the discussion, and some folks automatically accuse veterans of being too touchy about it....

I trained and served and personally met and knew men that suffered under the hands of the "kindness and benevolence" of the hospitality of the NVA.....

I had a bumpersticker that I proudly displayed....:, "BOYCOTT JANE FONDA: AMERICAN, TRAITOR, b****!" I was questioned about it a couple of times from a good friend's mother and a couple of other people....they did not believe I displayed it and then I explained why.... then she wanted one too....other than that I got a BLEEPING HELL of ALOT of compliments about it.

To this day I fail to understand WHY people are so forgiving of her and her conduct!!! Her Daddy had money and she had money too....

Her ex....Tom Hayden wanted a memorial to those who protested the war at one time...( Why was I not surprised?)

Michael A Smith WILL ALWAYS HAVE A COLD ADULT BEVERAGE AT MY EXPENSE AND A BUFFETT TICKET A YEAR, EVEN IF I HAVE TO DO WITHOUT!!!!

GOD BLESS HIM!!!!

WELCOME HOME MICHAEL A. SMITH!!!!

Ditto.... You haven't heard a training lecture about the Code of Conduct until you've heard one directly from a man who had to live it in Hanoi...... *shudder* That made one hell of an impression on my young life......

I know and I actually expected a flaming response. I just wanted to make sure everyone knew I wasn't trying to joke about it, but rather looking for a serious answer.

LS3 I was not trying to be condesending or anything like that. I realize that what happened so long ago was nothing but a story in a book or maybe from a person who was there to many people.
I meant no insult nor do do I feel or think SGH meant any insult or offense to you! I sincerely hope none was taken on your part.

I don't have words to describe the feelings or pain or trauma Hanoi Jane caused to my brother and sister vets and to POWS, but I assure you the pain is still carried on today and will be for many years to come.

I would love to give you a better and more eloquent answer but what I gave you .....is what you get....

Again no offense is meant to you....

Trust me, it takes quite a bit to offend me. I like to joke around quite a bit, but I also like to hear bits of history from people who lived it. Like you said, to most of us it is nothing more than a paragraph in a book.
