Coast of Carolina

Post by UCLA Parrothead »

I've been a Parrothead for a long time, but Coast of Carolina is now my favorite song by The Man.

Anyone know what it is about? I can guess, but I am looking for confirmation....

From what I know, the first verse honors long-time friend Larry Groovy Gray who was killed in a plane crash in late-'03. He also introduced Jimmy and Jane way back when in KW. The rest of the song is basically about Jimmy and Jane and their maturing and enduring relationship, I think. "A Pirate Looks at 50" will give you more insight into the history of their relationship.

I agree, great song.

Welcome to BN! :D

Well, I had the Jimmy & Jane part right. But, I could never figure out the first verse. It all makes sense now!

Thanks :)

My favorite on LTC, too. Co-written with Mac, as many of my favorite JB songs have been.

"And the walls that won't come down
We can decorate or climb or find a way to get around"

Great lyrics. He said it's one of his better ballads ever; I agree. It grabbed me the first time I heard it.

I always thought that Mac wrote the majority of it and JB just pitched in a verse. I assumed that JB added the one that starts "It's been a lot of Come Mondays since the phone booth that first night..."

Kind of the same with "Semi-True Stories" ("It was on the same day that God's Own Drunk was recorded ...")
"Some people never find it..."

I always wondered about the origin of the opening line. It always made me think it was a punchline to some inside joke. :-? It just had nothing to do with the rest of the song.

It IS my personal favorite off of LTC!

But the day he had his run in with Sheriff Buford Pusser was the same day "God's Own Drunk" was recorded in Nashville... ran into him in the parking lot of a hotel where a Law Enforcement convention was taking place ... Pusser is the "Walking Tall Sheriff"... that's all part of the "True Story" from that verse ... :) So I dont think that song reference was thrown in there just for the heck of it...

Didnt mean to go off topic there...

COC is a wonderful song and one of my few fav's from LTC... Lyrics tell the story with few words, straight to the point and tough to do...

It makes me feel good inside to think that he and Jane have been together as long as they have and he still writes about her. and it is cool to think he is as loyal to his friends as he is. Lots of people talk the talk but he also walks the walk.

warm fuzzies all around here

I hope there's more Mac/JB collaborations like these ("Coast of Carolina", "Semi-True Stories") on the next record.
