BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa (AP) -- A South African zoo wants a chimpanzee to quit smoking cold turkey.

Keepers say Charlie the chimpanzee picked up the habit from visitors at the Bloemfontein Zoo who sometimes toss him cigarettes.

"It looks funny to see a chimp smoking," a zoo spokesman said, but Charlie's trick could cost him his health.

The zoo is asking people to stop tossing cigarettes and contributing to the chimp's habit.

A zoo official says Charlie "acts like a naughty schoolboy" and hides his cigarettes when workers are around.

You know, I never fail to be amazed by the sheer stupidity of much of the human population.

I'm actually surprised Charlie is still alive. Primates do not have immunities against our germs....a simple human cold can kill them. So now we have the human germs on the cigs as well as the effects of nicotine etc at play here.

My personal opinion is that they should fire everyone in that zoo that let this become a problem.

Although he really doesn't need them since he's getting used cigs...blech.

The reason I asked is because that would pose a serious fire risk if people are throwing lit cigs.

yeah...well...somehow I don't think that ever popped into their little minds.

Not sure what the zoos in South Africa are like, but here in the US where we've gone to naturalistic exhibits with lots of vegetation it definitely would be a problem.

He actually hides his cigs from his keepers; I guess he is against the idea of quitting.

The chimp seriously looks like he's been smoking for years, just the way he somkes and holds the cigarette. Make ya wonder what the world's coming to.
