I am planning a trip to the Lower Keys in the begining of August this year with my family and folks are telling me it is brutal there around that time. I am coming from Jersey which isn't exactly cool that time. Does anyone have some insight as to the climate then? Although anytime in the Keys is going to be great as far as I am concerned. We will also be snorkeling most of the time anyway, so hopefully well be wet. Also We will be with our 16 yr old and a 12 yr old sons, is there any chance of hitting any bars? I know some islands have beach bars, is that so in FL as well?
Thanks,
Cliff

Yeah...it's hot. Yeah...it's humid. Just like home (Va. Beach) that time of year. But you're in tropical Florida so you expect it. The difference is you usually have the constant breezes. Here, in August, it's hot and humid and not a breath of air. I'd rather be down there in August than here in August. Go and have a good time.
A bad day in the Keys is always better than a good day anywhere else. Yeah, it will be hot, upper 80's, but usually a breeze off the water. Be sure to use alot of sunscreen while snorkling, the sun will cook you. You will be able to find island bars just about everywhere.
i have no plans for diving yet, but will most likely take charters. The one i really wanna do is the dry tortugas on one of those high speed boats. so to take your advice i will not book a trip w/o a covering.

We did the Dry Tortugas trip http://www.yankeefreedom.com
when we were there in november 2003 for MotM. It's a long
day, and will wear you slap out, but well worth it!

Make sure to get one that gives you free wine on the ride back to Key West. Cheap wine after a day in the sun and the water makes the crawl to Capt Tony's or Sloppy Joes afterwards very interesting.
I lived in Miami for two years. South Florida in August is hot, but the breeze saves you. I was in Jamacia in July, now that was hot, but same thing, you were saved by the breeze. I am heading down to the KW in 10 days. I can't wait!
as i mentioned we live in new jersey and the summer is HOT w/o any breezy so i think we can handel it. BTW, we were in St John for a week last yr in July. That was hot as well, but as someone said a HOT day in paradice is better than ANY day in jersey. We will be staying at the Southermost beach Hotel in KW for four days. Has anyone been there? I hear there is a clothing optional bar next door, what's that about? I know my 16 yr old will enjoy the sights, maybe..... Also is Sloppy Joe's srtickly a bar or is it a resturant where my kids can come in for the food?
Thanks, HEADIN' DOWN US 1

N/NC FL...gets around a 100 degrees....in the shade, pure humidity and not an ioda of wind to save the day. Pure misery Even swimming pools are no use...the sun just heats up the pool and it's like you're in a damn hot tub.
side note - a good friend of mine, born/raised in FL until around 20, has lived in Jersey the last 5 years. He laughs at any person who attempts to compare "hot" in jersey to true Florida heat
Sloppy Joes is a tourist trap nowadays, i.e., it is fine for your kids.
Gotta take a trip to Ft. Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas. Awesome sight, and off the beaten path.
And KW in the summer months is hot, but not terribly bad with some ocean breezes (and A/C). Standing in the middle of Duval, of course it is going to be hot, though.

Again, don't kid yourself. My college friends who were NJ natives complained
constantly about the heat AND the cold in NE FL. I guess the humidity has a lot
to do with how it feels, not just the temperature. That's why we have "humitures"
reported on the local weather reports.
Just as a personal preference, I'd rather be in KW when it's 100-degrees that when it's 60.
That damp breeze is COLD!

Atlantic Shores is not just clothing optional, it's also alternate lifestyle. The view
isn't open from the nude zones to the neighboring properties, but if you really want
to know what's over the fence, you can find peeking points. Or you can just go here... http://www.glresorts.com/asr/LiveCam/CamOpen.html
If I can handle the heat in St John during July I think I can take Key West. The only differance is the Rum is more expensive here. Count me in. Two more Boat Drinks please!

Florida is hot in the summer... as all of my friends have mentioned... but in the Keys you never lack a breeze. Bring shorts....tanks, sundresses.... bathing suit and a hat. You won't need much else.
I have been in many places across the US where its not as hot temp wise as it is here in Florida...but the air is so still you could just choke. That isnt the case in the Keys!
I went last year at the very end of august and it was beautiful...however I was stressed out prior to going, becuase it was right in between two big hurricanes....I got lucky though it was beautiful!
