A Buffett tribute tribute album
I had a crazy idea today while listening to Sirius radios vacation station. I read or heard Jimmy say that its easier for him to make an album today because he doesn't have to write all the songs...so...what if he did covers of songs by the Buffett-style singer-songwriters like Jim Morris, Sonny Russell, Sunny Jim, Gene Mitchell, Eric Stone, Brent Burns, Don Middlebrook and the like...What do you think BNers? Any song request for the imaginary CD?
Re: A Buffett tribute tribute album
I think it would stink because those folks are little more than Buffett imitators themselves so it'd end up being kinda redundant. Just my two cents.lookingat40 wrote:I had a crazy idea today while listening to Sirius radios vacation station. If Jimmy were to ever do a complete covers album, I would hope that it would be songs taht influenced him early on or songs that he loves from a few years back, not songs written by performers who sound like him. I would like to hear Jimmy's version of something like "Smoke on the Water" instead of him doing a Sunny Jim song.

I find it so interesting that somehow people think Jimmy has got some copyright on anything having to do with the beach. Actually some of the stuff Jim Morris does these days is more true to Jimmy than what Jimmy does. Jimmy is still king but just because others do it well is no reason to put them down.I think it would stink because those folks are little more than Buffett imitators themselves so it'd end up being kinda redundant. Just my two cents.
To answer the question, Jim Morris "too Early For Drinkin" would be perfect.
Spending 24/7 in a Key West state of mind......
I don't think Buffett has a copyright on anything having to do with the beach. There's been performers all along that have plowed similar turf, it's what they do with it to make it their own that makes them stand apart. I hear very little individuality in these artists, others mileage may vary.SchoonerWharf wrote:I find it so interesting that somehow people think Jimmy has got some copyright on anything having to do with the beach. I believe that Jim Morris may be just as talented musically as Jimmy, at least the Jimmy we get nowadaze, ya know the Jimmy that's good for an album every three years with a couple of originals.
Just because you are not a major artist means you stink.
Everybody is talented in their own right, Sunny Jim is a great guitarist.
I do know I look forward to a JM release more than Jimmy's but then I'm all about the island stuff. But it does not matter since it's not a competition and there's plenty of room for everybody.

I'm not sure I NEED whole CD of Jimmy doing covers, but there are a number of good songs by better known and lesser known artists I'd sing along to if Jimmy played 'em.
James Taylor's "Captain Jim's Drunken Dream"
Jim Morris' "Navagator Afternoon" and/or "When Sunday Comes" (BTW, JM's song "Mary Jane Goes To Key West" hits the nail on the head where JB's misses IMHO)
Michael McCloud's "Just Came Down for the Weekend"
Would it be funny to Hear Jimmy do a cover of Brent Burns' "Livin' the Life" or The Great Divide's "Pour Me a Vacation"?
