Beach Boys

Post by PA PAR8 HED »

I saw the Beach Boys (or what is left of them) with my 7 year old keet on Saturday. What a great show!

Of the original members, only Mike Love is in the band. Bruce Johnston, who replaced Biran Wilson on the road pretty early on, was also there. Despite that (or maybe because of that), they sounded great.

It was a 2 hour show that covered almost all of the big hits. What I thought was most interesting - especially in relation to Buffett - was a 4-5 song set in the middle. They thanked the crowd for coming, for loving their music and for allowing them to "dig a little deeper" into some of their favorites. They went on to play songs most casual fans would not recognize. Granted, the crowd sat down for those songs - I think Mike Love needed a seat too.

But I appreciated their courage to get away from their sing-along hits and do something different.

Well done!

I saw them about 15 or 16 years ago back when Carl Wilson and Al Jardine were also in the group. I'm not sure if Brian was there back then, but I doubt it. It was a good show.

One of the greatest concerts I've ever been to was on Feb. 25th, 1983 at the N.B.C. arena in Honolulu. ALL SIX of the Beach Boys in concert (the five original members plus Bruce Johnston).
As much as I love going to Jimmy's concerts, that night was definately one for the ages.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. They do put on a good show. I guess I'm a bit of a "purist," but for me, they stopped being THE Beach Boys when Carl died. Mike Love's never really impressed me, especially when he bascially took credit for the BB's success at their induction into the RNR Hall of Fame several years ago.

But, the music lives on, and still creates a special feeling whenever I hear it. :D

The only time I've ever seen the Beach Men was on the Today Show Friday morning concert. Strange piece of scheduling this summer - Brian Wilson is at Jones Beach Aug. 13 and the Beach Men are at the Westbury Music Fair (or whatever they're calling the theater now) on LI the same day.

I tend to agree that this is not really the Beach Boys. But it was much better than expected. I probably would not have gone except for the opportunity to bring my keet. He loves Beach Boys music, and to see and hear it performed live was a great experience for him.

I did see a more complete Beach Boys in Philadelphia in 1985 (I think) with John Stamos on drums. That too was a great show!

If John Stamos is involved it really isn't the Beach Boys. :D

Accoring to my nieces and nephews in their early 20s, "Uncle Jesse" turned a new generation on to the Beach Boys. :D

To each their own but "Kokomo" is one of the most atrocious pieces of "music" I've ever heard and is a pockmark on the Beach Boys catalog. Then again, I'm one of the belief that they stopped being the Beach Boys loooooooooong ago.

After Kokomo they made a few other soundtrack appearances - "Still Cruisin'" on one of the Lethal Weapon soundtracks sounds a lot like Kokomo. And did you ever hear their version of "Wipe Out" with the Fat Boys? Ouch!

I think JB has clearly done a better job of following his own song lines. But as I said earlier, I give the "Beach Boys" that I saw a lot of credit for playing songs not on Endless Summer (their SYKBH?). They took a moment and played a few songs the crowd was less familiar with.

And you also need to be able to read humor into posts where maybe it's not evident. Still, "God Only Knows", it's not. And yes, I consider that era of the Beach Boys career utterly embarassing, especially taking their past work into account.

I'm not a big fan of Mike Love carrying the band along. He is not "the Beach Boys". They were great in their day and I'm fine with him playing their songs, but he should not be touring as the Beach Boys, even though he was the only one to appear in all the band's concerts.

Exactly. Brian Wilson he is not. Washed up former sitcom star who just so happened to have a fluke hit (that doubles as the soundtrack to any exotic vacaction commercial) with a formerly great band? Yep. Now, if he'd just get on the psychedelics already. Perhaps he and Saget could do some kinda tour together.
