Exactly. Brian Wilson he is not.
Does this mean that he is mentally stable?

Oh nevermind, I doubt you can comprehend what that means.

Accoring to my nieces and nephews in their early 20s, "Uncle Jesse" turned a new generation on to the Beach Boys. :D
To each their own but "Kokomo" is one of the most atrocious pieces of "music" I've ever heard and is a pockmark on the Beach Boys catalog. Then again, I'm one of the belief that they stopped being the Beach Boys loooooooooong ago.
wow you're so serious and critical about music .. . .pockmark, jesus christ, lol
And you also need to be able to read humor into posts where maybe it's not evident. Still, "God Only Knows", it's not. And yes, I consider that era of the Beach Boys career utterly embarassing, especially taking their past work into account.
As someone who is about the same age as PA PAR8HED's nephews, I can assure you that if it wasn't for "Kokomo" was probably one of the Beach Boy's most important hits, because its the song that turned me onto them as well as most other fans I know my age. Sure, i've dug deeper into their catalouge but it was that song that made me like them. Therefore, since you seem to know everything about music, i can't comprehend how you would consider such a pivotal song for younger listeners (as well as a song that give the beachboys somewhat of a comeback) a "pockmark" on their catalouge

Exactly. Brian Wilson he is not. Washed up former sitcom star who just so happened to have a fluke hit (that doubles as the soundtrack to any exotic vacaction commercial) with a formerly great band? Yep. Now, if he'd just get on the psychedelics already. Perhaps he and Saget could do some kinda tour together.

I tend to agree that this is not really the Beach Boys. But it was much better than expected. I probably would not have gone except for the opportunity to bring my keet. He loves Beach Boys music, and to see and hear it performed live was a great experience for him.

I did see a more complete Beach Boys in Philadelphia in 1985 (I think) with John Stamos on drums. That too was a great show!
Was that at the Spectrum with Chicago?

I remember that. They all came out at the end and played together. I remember the Beach Boys sang "Wishing You Were Here", like they did on the original.

I've always been more of a Brian Wilson fan and, to be honest, I prefer him more with the Wondermints than with the Beach Boys.

I saw them about two years ago at the Tower Theater when they did the "Pet Sounds Live" tour.

They were fantastic.

The thing about Brian is that, obviously, there's the music, but how can you not love somebody who's created so much joy out of so much sorrow?

I've seen him a couple of times now. The show at the Tower, once on the "Love and Mercy" tour and at a benefit in New York about three years ago.

There are times when the damage he's done to himself is obvious and he looks almost like he's had a stroke, but he's got tremendous stage presence and really knows how to charm a crowd.

A good friend of mine was at the Winfrey Hotel in Nashville a couple of years ago and there was Brian and one of his little daughters sitting at the piano in the lobby.

She says that he was very friendly and played "In My Life" for the people who had gathered around him.

That's just my personal opinion. It's wonderful if someone got turned on to the Beach Boys because of "Kokomo", I don't have a problem with that at all. I'm just saying I'm not a fan of the song and don't consider it representative of the best of their work. If you like it by all means blow out your flip-flop dancing to it, I'll be saving up for this Saget-that guy that's on the Surreal Life that used to be Full House (now that's a has been) reunion tour. Maybe if we're lucky they'll get them Olson twins to open. :D

Hell, I must be gettin old, back in the day when the bay area had the original Soccer League Earthquakes. That was when Pele played for the Cosmos. The Earthquakes played at Stanford and at halftime the Beach Boys would play a free concert about 4 or 5 times per season. What a great way to get fans to buy Soccer tickets. My dad use to take me to Earthquake games just to see the Beach Boys. They ruled. Seeing Pele play soccer was pretty cool as well.

I am a little fuzzy on the year, but the show I was was the free show on the Parkway that summer. They couldn't play the Mall in Washington that year so they came to Philly. I drove from the Jersey shore with a buddy. Joan Jett and Charlie Daniels were also on the bill if I remember correctly.

The Beach Boys are still kickin'. That's more than what I can say for the Beatles. Didn't be Beatles quit touring before 1970? Cheers to Mike Love for keeping the Beach Boys going!!
Sunset Beach is my Margaritaville. Where there is endless beach, no time, and sunshine that seems to last forever. I know that Someday I Will.....Someday.

Not really a fair comparison considering there's only two living Beatles. They gave up touring because the crowds were so loud they couldn't even hear themselves play. I guess it's good that there's still a Beach Boys for people to go see, just don't mistake 'em for the band that earned them the reputation they coast on today. That, they're not.

It pains me to say this, The Beach Boys of today are indeed not the ones I loved listening to. They are not totaly bad mind you, just not the same.

I had the oportunity to see a BB concert which I consider to be the turning point. They were playing in Seattle (please don't ask the year cuz I just can't remember) and about 1/2 way thru the 2nd or 3rd song Brian just had to sit down, they finnished that song and stopped the show to take Brian back stage, when they came back they informed the crowd that Brian had taken suddenly very sick and they would have to finnish the show without him. I and many others could tell that Brian wasn't "sick" he was higher then a kite and we were very unhappy with the rest of the concert.

Bellieve it or not, I remember reading about that in Brian Wilson's book "Wouldn't It Be Nice."
HE couldn't even say what year it was, only that it was sometime in the early 1980's.

By the way-I highly recommend that book to any serious Beach Boys fan.

I think it was 1990 they did a show at Otis air base down on the cape, John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band (Eddie and the Cruisers) opened for them. It was a July 4'th show. all or them were there including Brian Wilson (excluding Dennis who had already passed away). John Stamos was with them at that show and so was his then squeeze, Paula Abdul. Last year I saw both the Beach Boys show and the Brian Wilson show. Brians show musically blew the doors off of the B.B. show. Sounded like the records. I saw what I think was the last show in Boston Carl played, it was after he got sick, great show but started off with a really quiet audience until Mike Love made a small speach thanking everybody about their concern for Carl but to start getting into the show. Carl was the heart of the Beach Boys after he passed it was never the same.
The last album they did just as the Beach Boys was from 1992, It was called "Summer In Paradise" although Brian-less it was a Kokomo like album that I thought was great, it was never pushed by the label and never got any radio play. If you liked Kokomo, listen to this album.
Sorry about the short story, didn't realize I was rambling.

Beach Boys Monument Rises

Brian Wilson to play at unveiling of "Surfer Girl" statue

Brian Wilson will serenade the crowd at the dedication of a Beach Boys monument in his hometown of Hawthorne, California, on May 20th. He will play a short set on the site of the Wilson family house, where he and his late brothers Carl and Dennis first harmonized together. The location, which received landmark status twenty years after the house was demolished to build a freeway, will be marked with a statue built by one of Dennis Wilson's sons, Scott.

"If you go over to England, they've got everything dedicated to the Beatles," says Scott Wilson, a building contractor. "The Beach Boys brought a lot to California -- the whole image of surfing, the beach and fast cars. Why can't we have something here?"

The twenty-foot monument features a stone image of the band's 1963 Surfer Girl album cover, surrounded by a brick stage with six gold records cast in bronze, and a sign commemorating the site as California Historical Landmark No. 1041. The Wilson family selected the design over several submitted by fans to the Web site beachboyslandmark.org.

For years, Beach Boys fanatics have Mecca'd from all over the world to 3701 West 119th Street, to find nothing but a patch of grass by a graffitied freeway sound wall.

Former Beach Boys members Al Jardine and David Marks will also perform brief sets at the ceremony. But Wilson cousin Mike Love, the only other surviving founding member, declined his invitation.

"I'm going to be making a living," he told Micky Dolenz on the former Monkees' New York morning radio show. The current Beach Boys lineup -- featuring Love as its only original member -- is scheduled to perform in Florida on May 20th.
