So, I flip over to the news, just to clear my mind.... And what do I see? Seven U.S. servicemembers killed in Iraq this weekend....
So right now, and for the next day or so, this kid is sitting there wondering if a couple of people in dress uniforms are going to knock on the door, and if he's an orphan, and if that was the last time he would talk to his Mom. That's reality: seven families are going to get that horrible visit in the next day or so. And some friggin' teacher has the gall to ADD to this kid's stress level?? Shame on that teacher, the principal, and the entire school system.
SHAME ON THEM!!

Jen, I think you should give them a call.. And if you could record the conversation and share it with us I think we'd all be VERY interested in giving it a listen!

Although, knowing how soldiers can be, I would certainly hope and expect that the good superintendant of schools has already had a few phone calls and visits from officers and NCO's speaking in this tone of voice. And they damn well better hope Mom's CO doesn't decide to send HER home on emergency leave to straighten things out.....

I'm gonna take the stand that the boy NOT be suspended.
The situation was unfortunate, handled too quickly in a rash manner.
However, I also take the stand that cell phones be BANNED IN SCHOOL during school hours.
In the supposed haven that is the learning environment, they consistently shift the focus from "WE" to "ME".
It's a similar theory to the school uniform mandate that's become very much the norm.
That exact sense of entitlement and convenience that the personal cell phone has afforded to us, as adults,
has also spawned a whole host of other problems when applied to our youth. Whether it's behind the wheel, or behind the desk,
kids STILL have to be regulated in a strict manner with the hope that they mature into responsible, thoughtful adults.
The scenario of this whole incident really should not have to take place.
Let's face it, looking a just few years back, it wouldn't have happened at all.

I agree they should be turned OFF while in school, but disagree they should be banned from the building.
In an emergency, large or small, I would want my kids to be able to get hold of me. My kids don't have cell phones now, but I'm considering getting them each one for emergency use only, after an incident a few weeks ago. My son stayed after school and missed his ride. Because of bomb threat hoaxes, the pay phones have been removed. With no way to call, he had to walk 4 miles home in the dark down a
treacherous road with no sidewalks. Never mind any (human) predators out there.....
And, as much as I hate to admit it, if the school were attacked, cell phones could play a huge role in helping first responders understand what's going on inside.
So... banned? no. off? ABSOLUTELY. (Perhaps with noteable, pre-authorized excpetions, like the kid in this story.....)
Uniforms the norm? Where?? Not for public school up here, sorry to say.... I'd love to see uniforms required.....

I'm with SGH. As an educator, I don't think that phones need to be on in school. But look at extreme circumstances like Columbine. Phones can be a benefit if left off unless they are needed. Just don't let one of them ring when I'm teaching....

Uniforms are quickly becoming the standard here in middle schools and more high schools in SD.
Personally, it would've driven me nuts if I was subjected to that, but these are different times.
My original intent regarding cell phones, is to ban them during school hours, on campus. This policy starts next year in my local high school district. Before and after school, no problem. Nobody's child should ever have to be forced to walk alone. But in school, sorry, you don't have my vote there. Cheating is just the tip of the iceberg of problems with text messaging.
I think the school attack angle is just a little too far a reach.
After Columbine, yes, it is now a realized fear, but giving cell freedom to ALL kids (or at least those parents can afford to give them phones) vs. the alternative is just too much to reasonably ask IMO.

I see your point, and
absolutely agree phones have
no business being on in class, or even during school hours. But to ban them entirely means the kid won't have it with him/her during after school activities, when it might be needed for a ride, etc. And while the school attack angle might be a little far reaching, a terrorist attack might not be, unfortunately, and a cell phone could help me find my kid in a no-kidding emergency.
So while I think we agree in principle, LB, we may have to agree to disagree on application.

I can live with that
of course, we never got to the name-calling that SO livens up these debates!!
