I know there's a thread on here about "Surf Music" but what about "Beach Music" -- any fans out there?
What we call "Beach Music" on the coasts of Carolina and Virginia is "shagging" music (and I'm not talking about shagging a'la' Austin Powers)! The Shag is the official dance of South Carolina. Beach music is the type played by the Tams, the Swinging Medallions, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, etc.
A lot of folks have been introduced to it in Myrtle Beach. "Beach Music" is strictly an East Coast type of thing while "Surf Music" emanated from the West Coast. I've heard some folks refer to the Beach Boys as playing "beach music" but, as we say down South, that dog don't hunt!

There used to be a radio station that streamed their board-feed onto the 'net. 97 something, the Breeze. Beach, Boogie, and Blues was the way they billed themselves. Think they were an SC station.
I am fan of beach music, and also a fan of the now defunct Breeze radio station. I don't think many outside of the NC -SC area understand beach music though....they don't know what they're missing!

Saw the Swinging Medallions in concert Saturday a week ago. Then in two weeks we have The Temptations. Big fan of beach music and shagging... Gotta be with my handle... "Best in the world." At least I try to be.
Hey, don't forget, beach music was/is also popular along the Gulf Coast where I grew up, too.
Love the Tams, love Bob and Earl, too.
Believe it or not, Huey Lewis and the News did a great album called "Four Chords and Several Years Ago", that was a tribute to the beach music classics of the early sixties.
We've also got a woman here named Rolleye James, who plays a lot of beach music on her Friday night radio show.
I'm not a big fan of the Embers, Chairman of the Board variety of beach music but I do like the more R & B, blues based stuff like Clarence Carter does. I'm also a firm believer in the English definition of "shag".
