Theater Chain To Publish "Real" Movie Start Times

Post by Jahfin »

A movie theater chain says it's giving in to viewers who hate all the ads and the coming attractions and will start listing the times when the movie actually begins.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Loews Cineplex Entertainment says starting next month it will put notes in newspaper and Internet ads stating that most movies actually start ten to 15 minutes later than the time listed.

An Illinois lawmaker is taking credit for the change. He proposed a bill which would require theaters to list actual movie start times.

The bill hasn't passed, but Loews admits it sparked the change.

While some may welcome the change one company official says he thinks few will show up later.

He says he believes "people enjoy coming early, getting their popcorn, finding their seats" and talking to one another.

Myself, I cannot stand the trailers, commercials and crap that the cinema mega multiplexes offer up,
and I always plan to be in my seat about 15 minutes AFTER the posted start time.

It's really kind of sad, 'cuz being there for the previews used to be, to me, a BIG PART of the whole movie-going experience.
But whoever is in charge decided that since they have you as a captive audience,
now they can bombard you with TV commercials, non-relevant advertising, and just total B.S.

now, i just skip all that.. :-? and enjoy the movie :P

At the Regal cinemas near us that we go to, they have the '20' before all the movies. It's not all ads, they throw in some trailers, some stuff that's coming up on tv, and one or two actual ads. Not too bad, gives me a chance to get over the fact I just spent a small fortune on a %$&! popcorn and a small soda.

God forbid I decide to get a box of sno-caps, I need to get a second mortgage.

The trailers I actually like. It's the ads for cars and Mountain Dew that drive me nuts. I just paid an arm and a leg for tickets and now you're going to make more revenue by wasting my time with advertisements? Must be taking lessons from the oil companies on how to stick it to the customers. :-?

I don't mind previews of other movies, but I HATE the commercials. I figure if I'm paying $8.00 for a movie, they don't need to try to sell me Pepsi, too....

hIf I ever go to a movie and they have commercial intermissions...I will be done with movies FOREVER!

I don't mind the commercials, trivia, and other stuff when it happens BEFORE THE MOVIE"S LISTED TIME. Once the clock says it's time for the movie, run three previews and start the film.

My wife and I know how long the "Pre-Show Entertainment" is at the local theatre chains.

We know that if we are going to a Marcus cinema for a 7:00 show, we don't need to be there until at least 7:15.

If it's the Capitol Cinemas, better be closer to 7:05, maybe 7:10.

Rosebud or Times, we get there early. One, maybe 2 previews. Sometimes none. Never have commercials.

Maybe because there hasn't been anything decent to go see in a year? Or maybe more people are content to watch DVDs at home. More on the latter here:

Hollywood's box office flameout

Movie fans are loving DVDs, but not theaters. Maybe it's time for a big change in movie viewing.

I think it's more that I have 2 small children at home and have better ways to spend my money.

I haven't had the time or energy to pay attention to Hollywood, less George Clooney, in years.

"At the same time, movies have become exorbitantly expensive to market and distribute, and the growth of in-theater advertising, rising ticket prices and disruptive cell phones have made movie-going far less enjoyable. "

Not so much the cell phone thing, but the other two hit the nail on the head for me.
