British Sea Power, Bright Eyes, Bloc Party, Elefant....
Any JB fans listening to rock and roll these days? It's become unfreakin believable in the last two years. I can't remember a time in my life when there was so much quality music being released.

Maybe not rock n' roll per se, but new music in the form of the latest albums from Robert Plant, John Prine, Ryan Adams, Hayes Carll, Ray LaMontagne. Pretty good stuff out now for a year that had pretty weak beginnngs, at least from my perspective.cowboyjunkie wrote:Any JB fans listening to rock and roll these days?

The Plant material is very interesting. I can't take another Ryan Adams cd. He lost me after the Demolition material.Jahfin wrote:Maybe not rock n' roll per se, but new music in the form of the latest albums from Robert Plant, John Prine, Ryan Adams, Hayes Carll, Ray LaMontagne. Yeah, I'm loving the Plant album, it's really quite different from anything he's done so far but also seems like a natural extension of what he started with Strange Sensation on Dreamland.cowboyjunkie wrote:The Plant material is very interesting. I also am loving the new Ryan album. I think it's one of the best things he's done since leaving Whiskeytown and that includes Heartbreaker. To each their own but I'm not sure it's fair to compare his newest record to Demolition which was a collection of unreleased demos that was never intended for release.

Each of his solo albums have also been markedly different in style. Cold Roses is the first thing he's done that sounds like the Ryan most people are familar with from his work with Whiskeytown. I love it.

I tend to struggle with alt-country. I loved the first Son Volt but nothing that came after. Ryan Adams hits and misses with me. Freedy Johnston can be amazing or terrible (sometimes in the same song).Jahfin wrote:Yeah, I'm loving the Plant album, it's really quite different from anything he's done so far but also seems like a natural extension of what he started with Strange Sensation on Dreamland.cowboyjunkie wrote:The Plant material is very interesting. That's the problem with labels, particulary "alt.country". Not every one of Ryan's albums can be put into that category and not every artist slapped with that label makes "country" (alt or otherwise) records. alt.country, No Depression, Americana, Ya'llternative, etc. can mean everything from the Appalachian balladry of Gillian Welch to the punk rock infused bluegrass of Split Lip Rayfield and most everything in between so I try to approach it with an open mind. Sometimes I think a more accurate description might be "roots-rock" but not everyone falls under that category either but it may more befitting of bands like Los Lobos and the Yayhoos who flirt with more of a rock sound than a country one. Then there's Steve Earle who dabbles in everything from folk, bluegrass, punk, rock and reggae. All I know is I like it but that doesn't mean I'm going to go for every artist that gets put under that category.cowboyjunkie wrote:I tend to struggle with alt-country. You're talking my language now... The Bravery's album is my fave right now. (missed their show at the Metro a couple weeks ago... bullocks!) I'm seeing Snow Patrol tonight. The Killers, Rilo Kiley, The Stills... ugh! So much good music lately!cowboyjunkie wrote:British Sea Power, Bright Eyes, Bloc Party, Elefant....

Saw the Killers open for Stellastarr* over a year ago at a tiny club with 30-40 people in it. They rocked the place.iuparrothead wrote:You're talking my language now...
