Phan Benefit

Post by wannabejane »

With all the recent talk about hiring Jimmy to do a "private" concert for us phans, it got me thinking-and I'm sure I'll get SCREAMED at for being an ungrateful wench, but.... has Jimmy ever even considered doing a FREE concert for all his phans? You know, "for all the years". I know he has done benefits for schools, manatees, Alzheimers, etc. Why not give back to those who have enabled him to spend their money foolishly? Other entertainers have done this, haven't they? I'm not talking about Jimmy showing up unexpectedly at a bar or whatever. I'm talking about a right out there, announced, tickets in advance FREE concert! Well, it's a nice dream eh?

I realize that but like I said, he just shows up unnanounced and it's just luck of the draw whether he will be there or not. Also, this is for a very small group of people. It would really be nice to have a free concert that all his fans would know about ahead of time.

The result would be chaos. Who's going to provide (and pay for) security? Who's going to pay the liability insurance? How are you going to manage a crowd that size? What venue would let it happen? What community would want to absorb the huge costs just in terms of the extra police required?

I don't see it as a reasonable option.

Besides that, I don't see that Jimmy owes us anything.....

You're right, Jimmy doesn't owe us anything. However - it can certainly be done. Garth Brooks pulled it off in Central Park a few years back.

We can have it at my house. 5BR/4BA, 1/2 acre lot, plenty of room! And my Uncle Ray is mean and tough and strong. He can be security!

He did, and I think a couple others have in Central Park, too, haven't they? Wasn't Simon & Garfunkel's concert there free? But someone (Jimmy? NYC?) would have to pick up the (undoubtedly substantial) tab for security, cleanup, etc. It'd be a blast for us, but probably a pretty good pain in the neck for JB and his "people"....

Oh, definitely a huge pain - no doubt about that. I have no idea who picked up the expenses for those other shows. And with over a half million folks in attendance (at the Garth show), those costs had to be astronomical.

I think one thing that's missing is the link with the local community...in a word .... "Tourism" If a small town in the middle of nowhere was goign to host half a million parrotheads they would be looking at all the money that they would bring to the town and gladly throw in for extra security, clean up, etc.

Free live concert. Radio Margaritaville is a concert broadcast, not a free live in person concert. Jimmy has played MOM as mentioned. Yet on the other hand, the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane (Starship) have played the Polo Fields in San Francisco for free, with close to 100, 000 in attendance. They have done this a couple of times. These concerts were always announced well in advance, and drew awesome crowds. I agree that Jimmy does not owe us anything, yet there are several interviews with Jerry Garcia where he said that all artists that are successful need to recognize their fan base, and thank them every now and then. But Jerry was a different kind of human being. We miss you Jerry.
