60 Minutes Interview with JB-II

Post by Goodman »

Well months after it aired Goodman finally got to see the Steve Kroft hour with JB. It was on Channel 187 CMT. First, I love seeing & listening to Jimmy. He's a charming, likeable guy. As far as the interview - 2 stars out of a possible 4. Barely learned anything new; granted I know more about JB than I do some of my close family members. :-)

No discussion of the musical influences on JB nor about the CRB. Geez, how lame is that? How can you leave out the man who brought him to Key West and learned him how to hop railroad trains? Nary a mention of JJW or Steve Goodman. My contention is there is no JB without those two fellas.

Lastly, how many times do I have to hear Margaritaville? Kroft played it 6 times. Get a grip. One time and one round of Fins and let's move on. Pirate is fine since to me it's JB's true anthem tune. What about He Went to Paris, Southern Cross, Uncle John's Band? All great in concert tunes.

Ok, make that 2 1/2 stars. :-)

I saw it too and really enjoyed it. I think you expected way too much. Pieces like this are intended for general audiences and they were trying to encompass EVERYTHING about his career and his businesses. PHs already know all this stuff. Basically what you see is a non-PH view of JB, his fans, and the escapist phenomenon that is his career.

Well, I think you're both right. It was for neophytes who don't know who Jimmy Buffett is and can't understand where this guy came from and what he's all about! Jimmy hasn't forgotten where he came from or how he got here though. Maybe 60 Minutes or CMT or somebody else will take a few minutes next time to go into greater detail in to the road Jimmy travelled to Margaritaville. As for the music the show played? Well, I guess they needed to play something that those neophytes would recognize and relate to. To me, it all means new ParrotHeads and new phriends to meet at concerts and on line!

I think my fellow ParrotHeads are right. I'm too tough of a grader. Make it 3 stars. :-)

I gaind a lot of insight from the program, it was just different from what you referred to (musical influences, discography, etc.). I learned more about how he balances and thinks about the different aspects of his "businesses" including the creative (music), merchandising, and how he has so effectively taken advantage of opportunities that have presented themselves over the years -- The real follow up story was "How on earth did you end up with a #1 album (your first) at the age of 57???". I think that's what the story was looking for and that's what they got. If I were a non-parrothead watching the story, and even though JB attributes a fair amount of his success to good luck, I would have walked away impressed that there's a lot more to him than just that lucky partyboy image.

Do I hear a 3 1/2?

many of my co-workers came up to me after that show and said how much they enjoyed it . . .

" Wow . .I was very impressed . . . .he is really a cool guy . .! ! . . and he's definitely a very good business man . . . .let me know the next time he's in town , I'd love to go to his show . .! ! . .he's CUTE . .! ! "

these are the same ones that would rag me about Jimmy being a "pot smokin beach bum " . .

so for what the show did . . .expose Jimmy to non parrotheads and those who do not know the real Jimmy . . . . .

I give it a 10 . .

When Steve Kroft asked Jimmy where his fan base was JB answered that believe it or not it was NYC. You explain to me how if that's the case how there ain't gonna be a show at Jones Beach. I'm still bettin there will.

I experienced the same...I have my office filled with Parrophanalia, and sometimes take a bit of ribbing over being such a devoted fan, but many of the people I work with watched the show just to see what the hype is all about, and all came with VERY positive feedback about the show, and about the man himself. Two couples who have never been to or considered going to a concert bought tickets for the Wrigley Field show on Labor Day. So...I give the show a 10 also...

What infinite wisdom...Thank you Jimmy!!!
