I will be in Honolulu on my honeymoon from Friday afternoon to Sunday night in July. I have never been, but definately plan to see Pearl Harbor. We may tour the Hawaiian Cultural Center on Saturday, but haven't decided yet. What is a must do? We only have a couple days, so what are the things we can't miss?

Depending on how late you're leaving, ya gotta see Henry Kapono at Dukes on Sunday!

and if you can't do that, see him Friday night at Kapono's, at the Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Where are you staying? Easier to give you directions.

Hey,

If you like a good hike, the view from the top of Diamond Head is fantastic! Did that in February of 2004. The Punch Bowl is very interesting and a good fit with WWII history. The State Capital and Iolani Palace are cool. Give me a few more minutes and I'll think of some more. :D

Musts:

Arizona Memorial

climb Diamond Head

Waikiki (watch the sunset and hit Dukes for dinner)

Drive the windward side. Head east on H1 from downtown Honolulu until the highway runs out. Now you're on Kalanianaole Highway. Stay on it. After you go through Hawaii Kai, you'll go past Koko Head, and back to the coast. This is the windward side of the island, with some of the most beautiful scenery on Oahu. At every pulloff on the right, stop and take pictures. You can either come back to Honolulu via the Pali Highway or continue up the windward side toward the Polynesian Cultural Center. Do NOT miss this drive!!

If you're a Magnum PI fan, let me know, and I'll tell you how to go for a swim in the tidal pool at the estate where they shot the exterior scenes for the show. Legally, without trespassing. :D

Dukes for Breakfast, mmmmmmm coconut french toast with coconut maple syrup, and a side of sweet coconut sticky rice. Great breakfast buffet.

Dukes for lunch, mmmmmmm skip the food and just go for the best boat drinks on the Island.

Dukes for Happy Hour - Kapono on Sunday usually live music and a bunch of bikini clad cuties dancing on the patio.

Dukes for Dinner, - just go with the fish of the day, always a good call.

Then by all means go check out the rest of the Island. You gotta see sunset beach and pipeline on the North Shore, you will be in awe of God's creation. If God did not want us to surf, he would not have created North Shore.

except that this time of year it's often pretty flat... :(

but still awesome! :D

True, I have seen it in Mid Winter and it was pumpin', went out took one ride, scared the bajeebers out of me and I packed it in. I've been in some big surf in California, 18' - 27' but the power of the pipeline is something to respect. You can feel the overwhelming power from the beach.

you sure can..... it was running high in February when I was there. A long time surf photographer drowned at Pipeline the week before I arrived... :(

I won my honeymoon to Oahu out of Modern Bride magazine a couple years ago....

I agree about going out to Pearl Harbor and the hike up Diamond Head (although there are A LOT of steps but the view is totally worth it)!

If you're interested in swimming with the dolphins, go over to Sea Life Park where you'll actually get into the big pool with the dolphins (as well as a whalphin which is a cross between a whale and a dolphin--totally amazing). They teach you about the animals. After learning about them and touching them, you get to hold onto their dorsal fin and be pulled across the pool. It's a lot of fun!

I've been to the Paradise Cove luau twice and liked it (although Old Lahaina is better in Maui so don't go to PC if you go to OLL in Maui...it will pale in comparison). However, the food and show are good at Paradise Cove. I like it best on Oahu.

One particular thing you should not do is the Star of Honolulu Dinner Cruise. The ship looks nice but the food is not. Very overpriced for what you get and the show is cheesy (do we really have to watch the macarena and YMCA???). We were very disappointed with it.

Definitely take the drive up to the North Shore. It's a lot less city-like up there and is beautiful.

That's about all I can think of now.....

Good luck! :D

I agree with SGH
Rent a car, get up early and drive to Hanauma Bay
Image
Go for a swim if you have time, then drive along
the coast all the way to the North Shore, stopping
lot's of times for photo's and just for enjoying the
views. If you come across a roadside stand that is
selling fresh cooked corn on the cob, buy some it
is some of the best corn we have ever tasted.

When you get to the North Shore and the town of
Haleiwa, go to Matsumoto's Shaved Ice for the best
shaved ice(accept no substitutes, it is worth lining up for)

In Waikiki, we had one of our best meals at The Hau Tree Lanai
restaurant http://www.kaimana.com/dining/hautreelanai.html
it is in The New Otani Hotel at the Diamond Head end. It has
one of the best sunset views with all of Waikiki in front of you.

IF you're lucky, a wise one will be at the end of the pier at Waikiki at sunset and you'll hear some hair-raising stories about the ancients. :D

The film you see before getting on the jitney that takes you to the Arizona is amazing.

SGH took me to the Anderson estate. Quite amazing to swim where Magnum did!

I love the North Shore. Had my first shushi at a small road side bar/cafe on the way back after sunset. De-yummy.

The calamari SGH, my mom and I had at the TIKI BAR there at the Hilton (SGH: is that the right hotel) was awesome. Some of the best I've had. For real.

You had said you were staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on the Maui thread. We stayed there on our honeymoon as well in the Rainbow Tower. A definite must in the hotel is to go to Bali by the Sea. It's VERY pricey but well worth it. The filet mignon I had could be cut with a fork. We still talk about that place as being the best meal we've ever had.

Also, the spa does wonderful massages and facials there. The spa treatments and dinner at the restaurant were part of our honeymoon package we won so they were free for us but I would definitely put out the $$$ for either one of them!

Only a few more days for me and then I'm off to the islands!!! I can't wait! :D
